How would you pronounce Bleu?

Ok, friend of a friend had a little boy a few days ago and announced name of fb. I ended up seeing the announcement because friend of a friend commented on it.

They've named their baby Bleu. Am I going mad? That's pronounced like Bl-er isn't it? Like Corden Bleu?

All comments are saying how lovely it is and how he is their 'little boy blue.'

I didn't say anything and then our my friend mentioned that her friend had had a little boy and named him Blue. I said "oh like the colour?" and she said "yes, but they've spelt it the french way, think it's Bleu"

I said that Bleu isn't pronounced Blue but Bl-er and she looked at me like this --> Hmm

Isn't this baby going to go through life with 'Bl-er' as a name or have I got it really wrong? Blush

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I would bet a lot of money that it's Tyga/Taiga.

Intrigued to find out the name of the child with the animal name:

Rayven-Bleu?
Kitti-Bleu?
Tyga-Bleu?

You don't have to say, Tip. I know you don't want to identify the child.

"Bler" eh??

Wallywobbles · 16/06/2017 13:15

Im in France and Anaïs is pronounced anne-aye-ees (the s at the end is pronounced). The Bleu thing is just barking though.

Ha! I think they're confusing pronunciation with translation....

troodiedoo · 16/06/2017 13:13

Is the animal tiger?

Untangled07 · 16/06/2017 13:13

'Bluh' definitely. If they had a daughter named Fleur would they pronounce it 'Flu'?

chinlop · 16/06/2017 13:13

(how do you pronounce Anais then?)

An-ah-eess.

SleepWhatSleep1 · 16/06/2017 13:11

(how do you pronounce Anais then?)

TipBoov · 16/06/2017 13:08

Love her name isn't Animal but it's an animal, don't really want to say as it's pretty unusual! Also the animal is misspelled... Think Ellyfahnt-bleu!

WhenLoveAndCakeCollide · 16/06/2017 13:08

Jamrock - there were five girls and seven boys named Bleu here in the US in 2016.

Quite popular? I think not!

nina2b · 16/06/2017 13:08

It is...

nina2b · 16/06/2017 13:07

There is NO r - letter or sound - in Bleu. It us French for blue in which there is no r either.

HmmOkay · 16/06/2017 13:07

The problem with just deciding that a French word should actually have a different pronunciation in English is that most people won't agree with you. And you have to be prepared for that.

Most people in this country know how to pronounce bleu (the French football team are Les Bleus for a start).

If you really want the Blue pronunciation then keep it to Blue. Or even Bloo would be more logical.

masterblaster2000 · 16/06/2017 13:05

Oh god, and I know an Ava pronounced "Eva". On every school register etc or summer club or swimming lessons she gets called Ava! Why would you pronounce Ava "Eva". If you like the name Eva then spell it Eva?!

ChipInTheSugar · 16/06/2017 13:05

Common sense would dictate it's "Bleugh".

However I knew a Chlöe who insisted on her name being pronounced Cholee, on account of the umlaut swapping letters round obviously Confused

Ktown · 16/06/2017 13:05

It's pronounced ' bluh'

Bleu isn't even phonetically blue - it just sounds like the French word for blue.

GavelRavel · 16/06/2017 13:03

if i was a teacher reading a new list of names id say "Hello, is Bleurh here?" - because it's the word bleu, which is pronounced Bleurgh. silly people. It's like a French couple calling their child Red but insisting it's pronounced Rouge.

masterblaster2000 · 16/06/2017 13:03

I've got a family member named Bleu and yeah they pronounce it Blue Hmm I would have thought it was pronounced Blurgh until I heard them calling her "Blue"

chinlop · 16/06/2017 13:03

Sacré bleu!

Poor child.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/06/2017 13:01

Bleurgh.

A friend of a friend had a dd called Anaïs. Friend asked me how you pronounce it before going to meet her. Friend turns up says the name & mum goes 'oh no it's An-ay' Hmm.

LoveB · 16/06/2017 12:58

Called animal?! What?!

TipBoov · 16/06/2017 12:46

I'd pronounce it Bluh. However there is a girl in my child's class called "animal"-bleu which is pronounced "blue"

namechange20050 · 16/06/2017 12:46

Poor kid!
