How would you pronounce Bleu?

Ok, friend of a friend had a little boy a few days ago and announced name of fb. I ended up seeing the announcement because friend of a friend commented on it.

They've named their baby Bleu. Am I going mad? That's pronounced like Bl-er isn't it? Like Corden Bleu?

All comments are saying how lovely it is and how he is their 'little boy blue.'

I didn't say anything and then our my friend mentioned that her friend had had a little boy and named him Blue. I said "oh like the colour?" and she said "yes, but they've spelt it the french way, think it's Bleu"

I said that Bleu isn't pronounced Blue but Bl-er and she looked at me like this --> Hmm

Isn't this baby going to go through life with 'Bl-er' as a name or have I got it really wrong? Blush

Just to clarify the bleurgh bler, bluh confusion, I'd pronounce them all roughly the same.
I think it's a rhotic vs non rhotic thing? So I'd say barth the same as bahth (which comes up as a how to say bath conversation!)

We know someone who named their son Blue. Poor little fucker has a middle name of Colin so he is buggered both ways.

Quite frankly what ever what it is spelt it is ridiculous as a name for an adult

I glad I don't know anyone called Tyga-Bleu or Betee. I'd be very unsure about pronunciation and saying it out loud, I'd probably end up doing a half hearted attempt at a French accent and sound like the policeman off Ello Ello.

user Definitely not a typo. I may have had a sneaky look at both the parents' FB pages and they are both spelling it that way!

No-one else seems to be mentioning it, I feel like I'm the only one baffled by it all Confused

It's definitely pronounced Bleugh.
People do this a lot with Irish names - I know of an Eabha who pronounced it Eee-fa (which is actually spelled Aoife) when it should be pronounced Ava, a Shaun who says his name is pronounced Shan, and don't watch Corrie but I think they did this recently with Michelle's baby - called him Ruairi and pronounced it Rory. Gets on my wick a bit. Just pick the right spelling/version if that's the name you want ffs.

If I came across a child called Bleu, I'd pronounce it as in French. And if the parents said "It's pronounced Blue" I'd have to say "No, blue is spelled B-L-U-E".

It's not even obscure - it's one of the first words you learn if you go to French club in primary school, for heaven's sake, never mind do French in secondary.

That's very confusing. I knew a child called "blue" and they spelt it "b-l-e-u" I'd correct their spelling, as I'd think they'd gotten the u and e the wrong way round. 'Blu', 'Blue' or 'Bloo' are ok.

I hope the parents are chilled out types otherwise they're going to get very annoyed with people assuming the child is called 'Bleugh'.

You will find several threads in this very topic where people state that it's pronounced Anay, apparently this is quite common understanding in the UK. I wanted to use the name for my DD but this put me off.

I have a relative who named their son Mathieu, declaring it the 'French spelling' of Matthew.

I said, "but it isn't a French spelling of Matthew, it's a French form of Matthew, and is pronounced mat-YEU."

Relative said they weren't bothered by that, and they were pronouncing it 'the English way'. Well fucking spell it the English way then.
