Wife wants Elliot Johnny, but I want Elliot John!

DW's grandfather (the only man on either of our family that has never had his name as a middle name) and I do completely agree it should be used. He was a great guy.

His name was John but always went by Johnny.

Elliot John makes most sense: his name was actually John, it also sounds and looks better.

She is very much set on Elliot Johnny! How do we decide??

Elliot Johnny is dreadful. It sounds and looks ridiculous. I hope your wife comes to her senses.

Objectively as others have said - Elliot John is better and makes more sense. BUT -

  • Elliot John just sounds like Elton John. It's too similar. I laughed reading your OP, that's the first thing I thought of.
  • this is about your wife's grandad and the 'honouring' of her side of the family, therefore I do think she should be the one to decide which form of the name she more closely associates with HER family memories and her grandad. That's what the point of giving this name is really.

So Elliot Johnny. But it does sound a bit odd. Personally I would stick another middle name in whichever option you go for. Could you compromise on - you go for Elliot John, but she gets to choose a middle name that goes between them to make up for going with John? That would get rid of the Elton John thing too?

Elliot James John
Elliot Max John
Elliot Jonas John

etc.

Agree that Elliott John flows better. It does sound a lot like Elton John though - could you reverse the names or use an additional middle name (Elliott Michael John?) to get round this.

Johnny Elliott sounds nice but I'd still put John on the b/c and use Johnny as a nickname.

Elliot John flows better. Elliot already has three syllables, I think a short middle name sounds better.

I also agree with the person who thought of condoms when you heard Johnny. Sorry, I know it's sentimental, but it has that association for me.

Don't agree with Someknobend at all.
The baby will have 2 parents, and together they need to work out what to do for the best.

I had a similar problem as we gave my son my DPs grandads name as a middle name.

His name is Hugh but he goes by Hughie, we stuck with Hugh in the end. I prefer John to Johnny.
