Overheard name in supermarket yesterday and thought it was unusual but pretty? Thoughts?

Sloane Ranger not necessarily kind 1980s slang word, for young, wealthy, upper class people. Kind of predecessors to Tara P-T etc.

Was considered by DH and I for DS2 before we knew he was a boy, along with Greer.

I really liked it, but I know a couple of Aussie women with the name so I don't associate it with braying twats, only with extremely cool, surfing women!

I read somewhere that lots of negative words start with sl, like slime, slither, slob, slattern, etc etc. I don't like the name, sorry.

Very much not my thing. I don't like "surnamey" names much anyway, and I'm old enough to remember when a Sloane was common slang for an upper-class, and usually rather smug, sort of person. I'm particularly surprised that people see it as more of a girl's name because I can't see anything feminine looking or sounding about it at all - if you put a gun to my head and made me use it, I'd use it for a boy.

Sorry OP but I don't like it on many levels.

I don't (for unfathomable reasons admittedly) like the sound or spelling.

It just screams a name that tries too hard to be interesting, but just isn't Sad

If you name a baby Sloane, at least some people will assume that you agree with these sort of social attitudes:

I'm not a fan of surname names generally - Sloane Square was named for Hans Sloane.

And with the added resonance of Sloane Ranger, I really don't think this one works.

I think it's a really cool, unusual name...but not too out there. It reminds me of Sloane Square in London, which is a pretty trendy place.
