What names do you love but can't or won't use?

Maybe because it doesn't go with your surname, you know someone with that name, it's just a bit too "out there"...

Alex has always been my favourite, favourite name for a boy - but since it's DH's name, that's ruled out for me. At least he has it instead!

There are also a lot of girls' names that I like, but don't know if I would have the balls to use - my family all have very traditional, ordinary names. I like Marina, Beatrice, Emilia...

How about you?

Flora as our surname starts with FL

Alannah I love this but it is dhs significant x

Monica I love this but dh got his favourite name for dd1 and well everyone would think we had a sitcom name situation (dd1 is named after JD Salingers "The Catcher in the rye" just a shame there also is a P in Friends so I couldn't have Monica)

Aida DH veetoed..

Basil DH veetoed

Sorry, 'DH' not 'FH'!

User12345678912345 · 08/06/2017 23:14

Etta ... I love that name but FH has said no way! He thinks she'd get teased if not stick thin (Etta chocolate biscuit etc...) shame as I really love that name!

bluechameleon · 08/06/2017 22:26

Philippa doesn't go with our surname. DH didn't like Reuben or Elliott. Eleanor and Isobel had been used by close friends.

Dragonbait · 08/06/2017 22:25

I really loved the name Madeline and we were all set to call my daughter this. Unfortunately she was born 3 or 4 days after Madeline McCann disappeared and it just felt wrong so we had a late name change 🙁. Still love the name though.

BewareOfTheToddler · 08/06/2017 22:09

Thomas - this name has a sad legacy in our family.

Elspeth - my favourite girls name but can't use it as a friend got in there first. Angry As our DSs both have the same name (top 30), it would be a bit ridiculous. She was very gracious about us using the same name first time round but might not be the second!

SuperBeagle · 08/06/2017 21:48

Madeleine - strongly dislike the nickname Maddie

Alexandra - strongly dislike the nickname Alex

Chloe - too popular

Genevieve - would worry about it getting shortened to Jen/Jenny/Jenna because we already have a Jen in the family

Ivy - sounds like Ivy League with my surname

Lucy - sounds awful with my surname

Presley - DH hated it and he's probably right, it's a bit out there

Sarah - doesn't work with the surname

Violet - doesn't work with the surname

Lottie - we already have a Charlotte in the family

--

Charlie - doesn't work with the surname, and already have a Charlotte nn Charlie in the family

Evan - sounds like "heavenly" with my surname

Flynn - sounds like someone thing with a speech impediment saying Finley when paired with my surname

Harry - we already have a baby Henry in the family

scrivette · 08/06/2017 20:51

Riven as it rhymes with our surname.

Serendipity- everyone, except DH and I, hates it. (Although if surprise baby 3 is a girl who knows...!)

Naomi - DH's ex, I don't mind but he does.

Jezzifishie · 08/06/2017 20:40

Serenity, Felicity, Natalia, Juliette, Veronica, Coralie - all vetoed!

I fought for (and won) Fabian as our boy's name, but then I had a girl Grin

HerRoyalFattyness · 08/06/2017 20:23

Couldn't use Maximus, Lucifer or Damien.
(Ex didn't like them. Apparently I'm nuts)

Would love to call little girls Erza Scarlet and Mira (meera) Jane. But they wouldn't go with the names of my other kids and I'd get the Hmm face because they are anime characters. Grin

kingfishergreen · 08/06/2017 20:06

Oh and Wilder (for a girl) because it's not a real name 👎

kingfishergreen · 08/06/2017 19:14

Clara because it's a match to our surname and Beatrice because my dear friend's daughter has that name.

Katelocks · 08/06/2017 19:09

Marina - husband vetoed as he knows someone called Marina and doesn't like her.

Venetia - or any V name as our surname starts with D.

Loveday - adore this but would have been completely pointless mentioning to DH. He would have thought I was mad

UsernameInvalid66 · 08/06/2017 19:00

Joseph/Joe - my "one that got away" ex and I thought it would be kind of disrespectful to DH (he wouldn't have minded)

Matthew - DH liked it too but didn't like Matt for short. he now has a good friend called Matt and I think he's come around to it but our babymaking days are over!

Jago - always been a favourite of mine but DH was scared it was "too out there" when naming DS1. He reconsidered for DS2 but I said we couldn't use it as DS1 has a related name.

Adam, Alexander, Richard - would have been duplicate initials in the family and I'm fussy about that.

And of course a whole lot of lovely girls' names because I never had a girl!

ABCFamily · 08/06/2017 18:37

Husband vetoed: Magnus, Jasper, Peter, Andrew, Rupert, Hamish, Imogen, Faith, Ramona, Tabitha

Doesn’t work with our surname: Hazel, Clara, Ophelia (also probably a bit too out there, but mostly really bad with our surname!), Griffin, Sorrel, Caleb

Not brave enough: Damaris, Elara, Hester, Hermione, Jessamine, Leopold, Niobe, Phineas

Negative association (personal or otherwise): Patrick, Simone, Myra

Already have family members/close friends with these names: Adam, Nicholas, Henry

holeinmypocket · 08/06/2017 18:00

I wanted Lola but Dh didn't like it. The goldfish is now Lola!

QuitMoaning · 08/06/2017 17:58

Ella.

Because my son is called Sam and I cannot go through life with food poisoning.

weaselscanfly · 08/06/2017 17:51

Sonny, Ezra, Jonah & Beau - all vetoed by DH.
Isla was always my favourite girl's name but it's way too popular now (and I only have boys any way so it doesn't matter!) & Maggie because it's our dog's name!

UsaNayme · 08/06/2017 16:51

Endeavour - it's awesome! but I couldn't do that to a child

Rockaby · 08/06/2017 15:42

Girls:

Eleanor - too close to niece's name
Margaret - name of a friend who it would feel strange to name a child after
Alexandra - too close to nephew's name
Rain - vetoed by DH
Wren - vetoed by DH
Star - vetoed by DH

Boys:

Hamish - vetoed by DH as we aren't Scottish enough Hmm
Struan - as above
Innes - as above
Angus - as above
Ezra - too close to DC1 name

I love Scottish names!

Lemondrop99 · 08/06/2017 14:25

Nathaniel because DH hates Nathan

Tristan because DH dislikes it, and Alexander because DH associates it with someone.

DH likes Arthur but an in-law shares that name

Matilda.... because I'm having a boy!!! I also love Madeleine but hate Maddy so probably wouldn't have used it

If we want to go 'off the wall', I like the following boy names but wouldn't use them as they are too out there for us

Lysander
Aubrey
Kester
Lucius
Cassius
Devon
Quinn

SnowWhite33 · 08/06/2017 13:53

We have settled on the name just now. Finally something me and DH both like.
Here are the names on my list that we either couldnt use or my DH vetoed.

Juliette
Julia
Charlotte
Philippa
Sofia
Serena
Lucia
Marissa
Cecile
Celeste
Felicity

AgentCooper · 08/06/2017 13:37

Michael. It's my dad's name and I love it but we can't use it because it will inevitably be shortened to Mike and baby's surname will be Hunt Blush

HeyMicky · 08/06/2017 13:20

Constance and Ava - neither work with our surname. Also Clara as it would sound like someone gargling
