Elodie, Elowen or Eloise

Already tried to post this once but phone had a melt down so if it appears twice apologies Smile

My lovely friend is not on mumsnet so has asked me to ask your opinions on the above names. Wants the Nn Lola (I know it's not popular on here to assign a Nn, but so it goes).

Doesn't like the usual Dolores, Penelope, Lolita to get to NN and cannot use Lois as her DP has a DS Lewis.

Have pointed out "Ellie" is more likely to be used.

I thought the traditonal Cornish pronunciation was el-OH-wen. I'm sure I read on here that all Cornish names had the emphasis on the 2nd syllable. Or was it 2nd to last syllable? Either way, I thought it was el-OH-wen.

Also, how about Lois? That's a definite 'low' sound.

I'm Cornish and have only ever heard it said eh-LOW-en with the emphasis on the second syllable.

Hey Dixie,

In Cornwall the name Elowen has emphasis on the 'El' not the 'Lo' so my worry is she will end up being nicknamed Elle. I think best to call her Lola, lovely name!

Elowen most naturally shortens to Lola as the stress is on the 'lo'.

I chose my DS's name after really liking a nickname it very frequently gets shortened too (not this name but think Matt from Matthew) but he ended up with a totally different less common nickname (so in that example imagine Hew). Mostly I call him by his full name and love it. I just don't think you can force a nickname unless that is what you specifically call him (so I should have called him and told everyone he was Matt).

Just call her Lola

It's a name in its own right. I don't get why you'd name your child one name but call them by another name.

I agree with chop - give Lola as a first or middle name with one of the nice names to go with it - Elowen Lola/Lola Elowen etc

YY to this^^! At least it isn't Lolita, which I swear I saw suggested on here when I was expecting my DD. Bleurgh.

I like Elodie best, but all are lovely.

As an aside, Lola / Loloita are two names I think best given to pole dancers, not given to babies.

If they are dead set on Lola, why not Lola Elowen (or Elodie or Eloise) which gives her the option of using either when she's older?

If I had one of those lovely fairy names I would not want to be called Lola. The name has always sounded quite seedy to me, I blame the Kinks and Nabokov for that.

I love Elowen followed by Elodie. But it feels a bit pointless saying that if they're just going to call her Lola anyway
Grin None of them seem to naturally fit the nn Lola so I'm another who says just give her the name Lola.

If they really want to name her elowen but be named Lola then they need all official forms for school etc to be Lola. If the teachers call her elowen then the kids will too.

Nick names just happen they can't be planned. My son is boo and it's nothing like his name.

If they love Lola then have Lola. I like all 3 of the other names though.

Thanks for replies. Her DP wanted something more formal.

It's going to be a case whereby name is "xxxx to be known as Lola" and will be called Lola from the start.

Thanks for replies. Her guy was Elowen with mn Alice or Jane.

I love Eloise (my daughter) also loved Elodie. She doesn't get called Ellie, also liked Lola as a nickname but she has ended up with the nickname Weez! Sometimes you just can't choose those things!!

Eloquent would be the easiest name to shorten to Lola.

Why can't your friend choose Lola as a name?
