Fight over names.. Whose are better, mine or his? Juniper or Jane...

Juniper
Evangeline
Lilias

DP's:
Jane
Violetta
Constance

Only one I'd consider out of the original list would be Jane.
Possibly Constance at a push, as I quite like Connie (but would hate Con, and don't really like Constance). The later ones added / suggested don't get much better really.

Im not keen on your names they make me think of plus size models, the type covered in tattoos in retro pin up styles. I can't remember the name of the company, they are well known.

Jane is the sweetest. And most unusual for a baby.

I love Lilias but had an aunt of that name which sways me probably. She hated her name though as she said it rhymed with 'Silly-ass'. I pronounce it just like Lilian but with an s rather than an n.

I'm afraid I'm not keen on the others.

I think we have the same taste OP, other than Evangeline! Love Juniper and January in particular. I'm also a big fan of Lilias and have many in my family tree. Pronuciation isn't straightforward though. I see that flora has given one above, but the ones I have come across were pronounced Leeliss. Standard Scots pronunciation and historical spellings would tend to support this, e.g Lillas, Lilless.

I knew one old lady who pronounced her name along the lines of Tobias, and the modern pronunciation appears to be Lily-iss. I'd just go for Juniper myself! Wink

I'm aware of the origins of Lilias, as it is a name that occurs a few times in my father's family. I like it better than Lily. I think it's going a bit far to accuse people of xenophobia.

It's surely reasonable to draw attention to possible associations that names might have? People are free to disregard them if they wish.

I don't like Sorrel, but I wouldn't call it awful.

29 out of all the virtue names Mercy is awful and no wonder it's not often come across (unless you're a bible basher)!

Agreed also in a way re child not turning out like the virtue name.

Sorrel is lovely. I know a tree/plant based name that's really pretty and unusual but gone out of my head will post if I think of it.

Marina is lovely, as a first name. Mirabelle is nice from someone else's list.

Why not call her June rather than Juniper (it'll get shortened anyway) friends of mine had a DD last week in May and called her June.

I really am worried by the xenophobia shown on some of these pages towards names from non-English cultures.

Lilias is a Scottish version of 'Lilian', which is a name that's been known since the 16th century, if not before. It's a derivative of 'Elizabeth', not of the flower name 'Lily'.

It is pronounced 'Leehl-eeh-uss'.

It has (of course) nothing to do with Lilets. The popular English flower name Lily/Lili is much closer to that, but is still very popular. Strange how none of the critics of Lilias mention that ...

There used to be a brand of sanitary towel called Lilia, as well as the tampons. You obviously don't remember it, but lots of people will.

Lilias is pretty, but unfortunately has associations with, er, feminine sanitary products.

Jane is the only one from the original list that I like, but could do with a more spectacular name to go with it.

Mercy is a virtue name that I don't often come across.

Marina is lovely.
