Like posh names, here's my list, what else should make the cut?

Hi all,

Baby due in 6 weeks and we are stuck for names. I think it's compounded by the fact that ds1 didn't look anything like his planned name and ended up with something way down our short list - suits him perfectly though! He is a Freddie. We have a short, strong surname so first/middle names can afford to be a bit longer but anyway, here is my short list so far. What am I missing and do you have any favourites or good combinations? We'd like 2 middle names.

Octavia (Tavi/Occy)
Ottilie (Ottie)
Genevieve (Evie)
Beatrix (Bea)
Xanthe
Violet

Archibald (Archie)
Theodore (Theo)
Bertram (Bertie)
Ludo
Barnaby

Thinking of the "poshest" folk I know, their names are;

Horatio
Nigel
Graham
David
Edmund
Nicholas

Rosemary
Jennifer
Lyneth
Fiona
Amanda

I agree that a name can only be "posh" in context. So many names transcend all social levels (Harry for example). It's the person carrying the name that makes it "posh" or otherwise.

If you want a classic but not overly common (as in popular) name then I like;

Violet
Genevieve

Sebastian
Theodore (although I prefer just Theo)

Pipilang I wouldn't name my children what I suggested, but OP asked for posh names! They are some of the names of 'posh' children.
Missed out Arabella though, that is really quite up there.

The poshest people I know like pps Stinky, Nits and Shrimp are called Hog and Mooey. Not short for anything, proper nicknames.

I think Prince William is known as Wombat.

Not sure about posh (I am not even a single bit posh,) but I think:

Freddie and Theo
Freddie and Henry

Or

Freddie and Beatrix
Freddie and Evie

Go really well together.

All the 'posh' people I know don't go by their actual names but some sort of nickname that bears no resemblance to the original name at all. Shrimp is one example, actually called Olivia.

That's true. If your child is going to be truly posh he will be known by his surname anyway...... Grin

But those names aren't as nice and interesting as the op is looking for, I think. They're a little dull in comparison.

The 'poshest' people I know are called things like Stinky and Nits.

Ds is at a naice school. His school friends are all Edward, James, William, Henry etc. Very Thomas the tank!

I dislike Seb either, so unmanly, soft and oily sounding (sebaceous), shame as Sebastian is lovely. Suppose it's better than Basty Grin

A collegue who is quite posh Hmm named her child Edward though his given name is Teddy

But Amateur, posh names aren't the same as posh people!

I know lots of normal/common people with so-called 'posh' names! Our children have such names but we're not posh (although I don't really like the label).

In DC'S class there are 2 children named Tabitha 3 Alex both boy and girls and 2 Charlie's a boy and a girl, Oh and a Sebastian he gets called Seb which personally I cringe at Confused I know of a Beatrice who gets called Bea but that reminds me of the teenage craze that calls their friends or partners BaeHmm

I like Madison, Alex or Alexis, I love Georgia but they might not be 'posh'

Trying to think of my "poshest" friends names before realising I don't know anyone posh. Awkward.

I like milo, Theo, ottitilie (sp?) Beatrice but not Beatrix.

Although, I admittedly quite like Verbena, one of my mother's favourite herbs. But I'd probably use Verveine.

I wonder if DH would veto Verveine. Louisa Verveine, Lavinia Verveine... Hm. I think I'll have to send him a text mentioning that new "development"Wink
