Like posh names, here's my list, what else should make the cut?

Hi all,

Baby due in 6 weeks and we are stuck for names. I think it's compounded by the fact that ds1 didn't look anything like his planned name and ended up with something way down our short list - suits him perfectly though! He is a Freddie. We have a short, strong surname so first/middle names can afford to be a bit longer but anyway, here is my short list so far. What am I missing and do you have any favourites or good combinations? We'd like 2 middle names.

Octavia (Tavi/Occy)
Ottilie (Ottie)
Genevieve (Evie)
Beatrix (Bea)
Xanthe
Violet

Archibald (Archie)
Theodore (Theo)
Bertram (Bertie)
Ludo
Barnaby
Henry
Sebastian
Milo

On the subject of "posh" nicknames like Nits and Stinky, every Felicity I have ever known (quite a few) has gone by the nickname Flea or Fleabag (Felicity "Fleacity").

Beatrix
Theodore
Henry

Ludo is nice if short for Ludovic, but otherwise not nice.

All the others are very mainstream middle class. Octavia is not 'posh' imo, but an example of tth, and Occy has nothing to recommend it.

As I said its up to you what you call your kids, doesnt affect me at all if you like a particular name that I dont, you might not like my kids names either Grin

I think some posters assume that by liking certain names implies a) making a 'statement' or b) trying to be something e.g. posh.

But what if some of us simply like the names?

To be fair the people I know who are related to the queen are the least 'posh' people I know Smile very down to earth, no airs or graces. Definately a case of class doesnt mean 'posh'.

Not criticising the ops choices, personally I wouldnt chose many of them myself but its up to her what she calls her kids as long as its not too ridiculous or she is chosing them to 'make a statement' of some kind.

Pip are you insinuating I am not 'posh'? My dads name is Ian too Grin I am gutted Sad

Willow, what I meant is: Just because the Royal family choose s name like Ian doesn't make the name Ian 'posh'. Sorry I didn't write that clearly yesterday.

In other words, maybe 'posh' is the wrong description for the type of name the op is looking for. Seems it's more a classic elegant smart kind of name?

I think Vanessa Clarissa Julian and Peregrine fit your criteria but only like the girls names.

Bertie is a ridiculous name.

I know what you mean by posh OP. Everyone picking holes is being purposefully obtuse.

Barnaby is another silly name like Bertie. I'd go for something traditional like John tbh.

I do actually wonder how the OP defines posh? The word 'posh' makes me personally think of posh spice/Victoria and fake tanned people... Not particularly classy (and most likely not what the OP is looking for...).

I never said they had to like any name. Just showing that any name could be considered 'traditional' or 'posh' depending on how you defined 'traditional' or 'posh'. Smile

I think some of them are nice-ish but I'm not sure I'd want them to sound too nobby. Would it fit with your environment/surname?

and lots of french/celtic names.... But not many of your poshie ones

As for the boys names I only like Theo out of your list.

Mrsknackerd, well I really like them (apart from Gertrude) and i don't think I'm posh!
