I just came across this in the ONS data and was surprised how far down the list it was. Is it very very very posh? I quite like it...

I'm not going to type the word that came to mind, as I think it's offensive...

No, it's thinking it about certain types of people that's considered offensive. If you are going to think it at least have the courage to say it!

Mollie85 · 02/05/2017 17:07

(Just a quick derail re "bear")

I believe whatshername off the telly Cheryl - pop star with no surname -and her One Direction boyband dp have just used the name "bear".

Bear Payne.

I thought Rafferty was one of those "faux Irish" names ? Regardless, I do like it. Not with bear though... Grin

Ginger Spice has a Montgomery so that can't be posh either . . .

Agree that 'posh' people go for very plain names that three million other people in their family already have, like 'James'.

NataliaOsipova · 02/05/2017 16:08

Somerville Oooh - you're having a boy? Congratulations! (Derails thread - sorry!)

Rafferty sounds a bit "celeb" to me - so no, I wouldn't say posh. If you want to sound posh, you need St John (pronounced Sinjin) as a middle name....

LightYears · 02/05/2017 16:07

I like this rafferty.

VictoriaMcdade · 02/05/2017 16:02

Rafferty is not posh at all. I'm not going to type the word that came to mind, as I think it's offensive...

Sophronia · 02/05/2017 15:58

Not posh at all. A bit pretentious though.

Lilly16 · 02/05/2017 15:39

Love it.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/05/2017 15:26

Rafferty, not posh.
Montgomery, posh.
Woodrow ...

pipilangstrumpf · 02/05/2017 15:12

What does 'posh' actually mean?

Many people on Mumsnet find names like Sebastian, Reuben Hugo or Quentin 'posh', but I know mostly 'common' 'normal' boys with those names.

In other words, isn't it the person who might be posh, not their name?

FrenchLavender · 02/05/2017 15:07

Rafferty is not posh at all. That's not to say that no-one posh would ever choose it, I'm sure some have, but it is not a posh name per se. I'd say it's more of a trendy, try-hard name if I had to categorise it at all.

Quickieat2 · 02/05/2017 15:04

I like it

DramaAlpaca · 02/05/2017 15:03

The best thing about Rafferty is you get to use Raffy for a nn, which is so cute.

I wasn't allowed Rafferty as DH insisted, quite rightly, that it's a surname.

And no, it's not posh.

Somerville · 02/05/2017 15:01

It would probably be considered try-hard by quite a few people though - I say that as someone whose DC all have what MN considers try-hard names. Wink I'm trying to find a one syllable name for as yet unborn son, and finding it utterly impossible.

Somerville · 02/05/2017 14:57

Not posh.

badtime · 02/05/2017 14:52

Not posh at all.

OlennasWimple · 02/05/2017 14:48

very - Office of National Statistics....

Although Rafferty is more commonly known as a surname now, like most Irish surnames it comes from a first name to which Mac or Ó was added meaning son of or descendant of.
Recorded in several forms including O'Rafferty, Rafferty, McGroarty, and McGrorty, this notable Irish surname much associated with the west of Ireland, derives from the pre 10th century Old Gaelic "O'Raithbheartaigh". This translates as "prosperity wielder" from the elements "rath", meaning prosperity, and "beartaigh", to brandish or wield. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, or revered elders, and are usually prefixed by "Mac", denoting "son of", or "O", meaning male descendant of
