Thank you in advance

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
msgrinch · 01/05/2017 22:20

I am black. So I think I know all about derogatory terms. Chav/chavvy is a word for common here.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 01/05/2017 22:19

Lepetit your first post was

'Chavtastic, sorry.

runs away'

It manages to be a mix of both offensive and irritatingly coy. As a matter of interest what is your daughter's name?

DramaAlpaca · 01/05/2017 22:18

It makes you wonder if people who use the word chav also think racist, sexist and disablist comments are acceptable too..

I agree with you Navy. Meant to say that upthread but got distracted.

mammmamia · 01/05/2017 22:17

Mumsnet is so weird, I was expecting this thread to be full of 'she'll be one of 5 in her class' and 'too popular'.
North London here, I know about 10 Siennas and my DD has 3 in her class.

So what did you choose, Lepetit?

forfuckssakenet · 01/05/2017 22:13

Navy I agree with you 100%... replace the word chavvy with black, Asian, Jewish, any other demographic indicator and see if we still think it's acceptable.

Some people just spout absolute judgemental pish.

It's no wonder the tories are doing as they please to the poorest and most vulnerable in our society.

Lepetitmarsellais · 01/05/2017 22:12

When I was pregnant I thought long and hard about what to name DD. It wasn't just a case of what I liked; I wanted to choose something that would carry her anywhere, the old high court judge test etc, would sound good for both a little girl and a grown woman, and that wouldn't tie her to a particular time through being too popular.

Thick and ignorant? I don't think so.

It's not a presumption. I don't presume all Siennas to be like that. It's just a connotation. There's a difference. Having associations in your mind isn't ignorant.

123rd · 01/05/2017 22:05

Very pretty but also quite popular here too (south east)

LesLavandes · 01/05/2017 22:05

My daughter is called, Siena. She is 23 now. We have only come across one other girl in her life with that name and spelling. It is NOT chavvy mumsnetters. Ffs. Would love to know what you named your kids😂😂😂.

Obviously this spelling is named after an ancient historical city in Italy. Sienna is a colour. However, don't pay any attention to the krap comments. Siena (my spelling) is a beautiful name .

StinkPickle · 01/05/2017 22:04

Chavtastic

DramaAlpaca · 01/05/2017 22:04

That's a much better way of putting it Lepetit. Gets your opinion across perfectly without using unpleasant language.

Flogging Lauren is lovely, nothing wrong with it at all.

My DS1 has an Irish name which is considered very 'chavvy' by a contingent of MN.

Thank you, Joffrey. I thought so myself till I came on here! Grin

Lepetitmarsellais · 01/05/2017 22:01

People have no choice over their race, sex etc but people DO have a choice over what they name their child, so I don't think you can make that comparison.

Would it be better if the word chav wasn't used but we just explained the connotation we have with the name? Like for me, I actually think it's quite a pretty name but unfortunately I imagine a little Sienna to be wearing a jojo bow and her mum has a tattoo on her neck. Saying Sienna.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 01/05/2017 21:58

Ooo, Lauren's a beautiful name.

Sounds very graceful and proud. Lauren Laverne is a good example of a Lauren.

I think it's lovely. I obviously don't have a proper handle on chav, though, as according to Mumsnet, my dd's name is the very epitome of chavness Hmm
It's Lauren

DramaAlpaca · 01/05/2017 21:51

I'm with you Navy, and was also on that thread you refer to.

There are plenty of ways to say you don't like a name without using an offensive, derogatory term like 'chavvy'.

Like I said on that thread I challenge it regularly on here, but it's like trying to hold back the tide.

cavatron · 01/05/2017 21:50

Chavvy round these parts too (North West)
