Gwyneth or Ffion

My husband is first language Welsh which is why we are choosing a Welsh first name although we live in England.
I think we are set for a boys name and until recently I loved Ffion for a girl but as the due date approaches I am starting to wobble. DH prefers Gwyneth which I do really like but somehow can't imagine it for a baby.

Any thoughts?

Seconding Gwenno. Or Elerie. Not hugely keen on Gwyneth or Ffion. My favourite Welsh girls name is Sionead though.

I'm sitting here saying Ffion in various accents trying to make it sound like phone and I just can't...

I like Eleri best out of the three ☺️

Yes, ChunderDragon, but speaking naturally the emphasis on the 'i' can sometimes be lost - not every goes 'Ffiiiiiion'. It also kind of sounds like 'phone' in a Welsh accent as well. Just my opinion, never liked the name much (sorry!), and most girls I've known to be called it haven't been very nice (though obviously that's just coincidence!).

Gwyneth seems like an older lady's name.

Eleri is pronounced Eh-leh-ree, so elongated (and using Welsh phonetics rather than English).

@EdmundCleverClogs c'man ffon and ffion are worlds apart! The 'i' in ffion is where the emphasis lies.

I am a Ffion, it's a glorious name! Having said that, there are quite a few of us in North Wales, popular name.
Gwyneth Paltrow is such a dick, she's ruined the name for me!

Ffion is the better of the two in my opinion. You mentioned Eleri which I also like.
I have Seren picked out if I have a girl though I can hear my DPs family calling her 'Ser' in their Bristolian accents which slightly puts me off! 😂
I don't think Ffion is easily mistaken for a boys name, to me it's too close to Fiona to be masculine but that's just my opinion!

I don't like either I'm afraid. Gwyneth is too old fashioned and Ffion just sounds too close to the Welsh word for 'stick' to me. However, the latter wouldn't be an issue for an English person so I guess Ffion.

My favourite Welsh girls names are Bronwen, Rhiannon and Nia. I love Jennifer as well, but that's Cornish.

I would think of Ffion as a boy's name.

It's definitely a Welsh girl's name.

I agree Gwyneth sounds like the name of someone older which is why I can't imagine it for a baby.

Gwenan is nice but has negative associations for me so can't use it!

Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board.... I've always liked Eleri as well...

If you choose Gwyneth and you live in England, it'll be pronounced Gwynith. Would people think Ffion is F/eye/on, too?

I'm not Welsh but I know an Irish Fionn and an English Finn, both boys, so I would think of Ffion as a boy's name.
