But I actually don't hate it, and if i loved it (which perhaps I would if it had some meaning or significance to me) I'd use it.

Ah sorry I just saw that you said it was for a boy...

I have not heard of Sorley Maclane. So, assuming you are on a Celtic tip how about Rory / Ruairi? Sounds similar but doesn't make me think someone's passed away... Hmm

I like it! It's a well known but not widely used name in my part of the world. Makes me think of Sorley Boy Macdonnell. Also know a very cute toddler by the name and don't think they've had any issues with it...

TO my English eyes, it looks - as everyone else has said - like sorely, as in sorely missed, etc., etc. Which sounds very sad.
If it is pronounced differently (you've not said where you live) then it might be OK where you are, but in English speaking places, it's not really a very positive thing to call a child.
