I think the pronunciation confusion is to do whether you have a rhotic 'R'. If you don't (most English accents) then it does sound like sore-ly. If you do (most Scottish accents) then it sounds quite different because of the 'r' sound.

Just to clarify - somhairle is pronounced sorley too, exactly the same.
I imagine somerled is the same too, although I'm unfamiliar with that spelling personally

How is Somerled pronounced? I had a book when I was young with a character called Somerled, and I have always pronounced it Summer Led in my head.

My first question about it was "like Somerled?" But I've been off to Google now and see there are many many spellings. I'm from lowland Scotland, I perceive it as a fairly unusual but well accepted name. I quite like it, it has quite a 'surname'-ish feel to it, although I don't think it actually is. Those surname names in Scotland seem to me to be quite elegant and grown-up names.

DH is Scottish and he's never heard of it as a name (although he started trying to crack a joke about having once been to a funeral of someone of that name...could see where that was going.)

Soren, Sorin or Somerled (a name personally love. And it's actually the Norse version of Sorley, I think...) are imo also really nice and may work better in England (if you are in England)?

Wow! I had no idea that Sorley was so little known outside Scotland. To me it's a fairly usual and really lovely name. I'd use the Gaelic (Somhairle).

No. Sounds like a place name or, again, sorely. Not many people will have heard of Sorley MacLean in general.

I hope you're not in England OP, as it;s not go down too well there!

Sorley was vetoed by XH, to my disgust, but it's a name I love. My grandad was a friend of Sorley MacLean so I grew up with the name. I think you should go for it - there aren't enough of them around!
