Rex for a boy?

What do you think of it? I think it's cute for a baby but also masculine for a grown man.

Bizarre that people associate Rex with a dog but not Charlie or Sam. When there's thousands of dogs with those names.

Probably because people know people with those names, whereas many people won't know a person named Rex. The association is different. It's like saying, "Why does no one think of dogs when they hear the name Olivia?"... probably because it's bloody uncommon to hear of a dog named Olivia.

They've probably heard of dogs called Rex and not people called Rex.

I have never known a dog called Rex but I would immediately think of a dog.

Just like I have never met a dog called Fido and doubt I ever will but.. Fido is a dog's name.

I think that's what folk are trying to say. It is like a comedy/tv short hand for a dog name. Like Tiddles for a cat. (Or indeed Felix, and there are lots of children called that!)

I have no strong feelings about Rex as a name - bit short, bit harsh maybe? - but quite cute. Bit lothario Grin

If you love Rex you should go for it. It certainly isn't outlandish.

I had a cat called Oscar years ago. I didn't name him - I got him as a rescue.

I don't associate it with pets though, mainly because I've never met any others with the name. I am now aware it is quite popular though for pets.

I wonder if pet names differ regionally in the same way as children's names do? I should imagine that's quite likely.

Some people can't get their head round the fact that it may be a human name, but that it's been used for so many dogs over the years including dogs in TV programmes, that it has naturally become associated with dogs.

One really cannot help the associations that are triggered in one's mind. It's involuntary and depends in great part on one's age and environment as to the forms in which they have encountered it.

I love Rex! I considered it for my son and would consider it again. It is a bit doggy but so was Oscar a few years ago.

It's clear that most people like it, but some of those people think it's best suited to a dog, and a few people don't like it at all.

Best we leave it there before we all fall out!

Rex sounds like a dog's name also wrecks - just not very nice imo.

I really like Rex but my DP doesn't at all so no chance our child will be named that if it's a boy.

Yes I think the point of these threads is to find out people's honest opinions prior to actually selecting the name. Happy to hear the honest response of those that associate it with a dog, seems that only some people have this association and it won't put me off but good to be informed about it in advance Wink

Absolutely, Bingo - waiting for a birth announcement myself any hour now. No idea what the name will be, but I will be 100% enthusiastic and behind it no matter what. If they wanted my opinion, they would have asked. Or started a thread on Mumsnet Grin

Haha! I have divided mumsnet! I think this is he most popular topic I've ever posted!

Thanks to everyone for giving your opinions. I do still like the name and I think the poster who said that if they met a child called Rex then after about 5 mins they wouldn't consider it to be a dog name has hit the nail on the head.
