Names that made you think wtf?

My friends Mum recently had a baby and couldn't think of a middle name for her newborn girl. The Mum has a teenage sister, so whilst walking to the birth registration place, she let her pick the middle name just so her daughter had one. Turned out to be a normal name but what a way to pick a name.

There was a boy in my year who's middle name(s) were Ryan Giggs.

Anyone else come across strange reasons/funny names that made you wonder why the parents would want to put there child through it? Grin

Omg @galadrielsring I had a maths teacher called Mr Sharpe and my school librarian was Mrs Blunt!

Not giving you my first name (it's not Leia, Luke or anakinn) but my middle name is Skye (chosen by my dad - my mum had no idea why) and my birth surname is Walker.

At secondary school our maths teacher was called Mr Blunt. Not funny on it's own, but he lived with our English teacher, Mr Sharpe.

I'd also have to be carful with what I call my children as I have an awkward last name that will not go down well with certain names. Shame other people don't seem to notice this when naming their kids.

This post wasn't at all meant to be horrible to anyone, but if your name is Mary Christmas, for example, you can't expect to be taken seriously.

Before I got married I had people laugh at me and take the mickey out of my name because of my surname. I was really bullied at school. It's one of the reasons I didn't hesitate to change it when I got married.

I can only assume you've never had the piss taken out of your name. No doubt every single person who did it to me thought it was "just a laugh" or "light hearted". Let me assure you that it wasn't.

I'm sure you'd all be happy to have people laughing at you. Hmm

The mother of a friend of mine growing up shortened her name to Nazi when she came to live in the UK.

My Mum suggested that she stick with the original (and lovely) Nazneen.

She got married at 16.

We accidentally named our son with his first name and two middle names all being able to get shortened to other names that all end in a Y sound.

@AllTearsFlowFromLove oh god! I'm pregnant now and am making sure I spell out all initials for names I like/sound well together so I definitely don't get an unfortunate word.
Mary and Joseph? That's hilarious. I'd sort of be embarrassed if I was with someone and we had a pairing like that haha.

Nothing to do with names but my cousins initials are BO and I lived with a lad at uni whose parents were called Mary and Joseph. Goes without saying he had an ego to match.

@Cineraria wow! Those weren't the best names for the English! I'm sure they god teased a bit with names like Queen Elizabeth and Shitall, haha.

I really wasn't expecting this many people to comment with funny names but it's really cheered me up and made my night. This is so funny.

I've noticed a lot of people know a Jo King too, I feel a bit left out!

I am also called Alice Cooper. It's ok, most people under 30 don't know who my more infamous namesake is anymore.

I went to school with a Ronnie Rennie.

I went to university with a girl by the surname Pratt (quite normal in the eastern part of England) who had children with a man called Wright. The children really are Wright- Pratts.

A girl I know is called Scarlett O'hara. There's also a kid at playgroup called diesel which makes me giggle.

I have a few from students I taught over the years at an FE college.

We had a student who had a pretty but rather long African first name that she didn't use apart from on official documents followed by the names Queen Elizabeth and a double barrelled surname. She asked to be called Queenie.

We also had a Princess, whose parents initially planned to call her Amirah but on moving to the UK translated the name rather than transcribing it.

Shitall's parents apparently had discarded their first choice of name for her as relatives suggested it was too long and hard for English people to pronounce, so she might get teased about it at school. I can't imagine what name would have made that more likely than their eventual choice.
