What names have you been put off?

Are there any names you liked but have been put off by association or an event?

For me (A=and it's a shame because it is of course very popular and well liked) but one is George. My grandpa used to talk about "having a George" meaning a number 2...he said it was a navy thing and they'd talk about "going to the John for a George" and now all that side of my family still use the term! Has anyone else ever heard this? I've never come across elsewhere it so I wonder if it was something that someone my grandpa served with came up with and it caught on.

I also think Fraser is nice but put off by a horrible ex and I think Myra is pretty but can't disconnect it from Hindley.

@lorelai it is a GREAT name! Currently pg and still keeping it on the list. So not off it totally.

Lana? Seriously? One of my best friends names, a beautiful lady inside and out. So nice connotations for me, and yeah also because I'm not in Twin Peaks, I don't generally talk backwards.....

Got a five week old dd. We loved Luna, thought it was a very pretty name until a colleague said Luna-tic - and that was the end of that. Still like the name though!

Flora, because it is a margarine. Marge for the same reason. And Olivia because it is too close to Olivio.

Anything that can shorten to Dick, Willy, Fanny etc.

Anything that rhymes with a swear word or rude word.

Alice. Nice classic name, and then a read some horrible fictional poem (on here actually) about a woman named Alice, who'd used a dynamite stick for a phallus... Shock Just a poem but did put me off a lovely name. DD is Charlotte instead.

When pregnant with my first we really liked the name Logan if baby was a boy. Then one friend said 'Logan - shortened to Log, then you might as well call him a turd!' 😂 safe to say we decided against it. Ended up having a girl anyway!

I used to like Freya until DH said she would be called Deep Fat Freya at school.
We also really liked Ethan for a boy until we heard it repeatedly one summer being shouted by neighbours who were a couple of streets away 'Ethan stop it' 'Ethan put that down'. Ruined it for us!

I loved Jeremy for a boy but unfortunately all I could think of was Jeremy Kyle and Jeremy Corby Confused

Teacher so lots of names that I've been put off unfortunately! Conversely, I had a very cheeky chappy in my class who was just adorable called William and I love the name now. My husband wouldn't have it because he thinks it would be shorted to Willy!

This thread is bonkers. You do realise that your child is an actual person, and had no connection to the people you've known with whatever random name?

I can understand not giving your child a name because you don't like it, but to come up with a load of stupid reasons to not give them a name?? Why not just, you know, call them something you do like!

There are about a million names available...it shouldn't be that complicated to find one that fits. 😕

Scribblegirl. My dd had a school friend called Angus, as in angus me coat up. God he was sick of hearing that.

A little girl from the surestart centre was called skyla when dd was little. The mother said her name at least once in every sentence in a broad cockney accent. Nothing wrong with the accent. But just bla bla bla skyla bla skyla made me want to rip her tongue out.

Dd1 was very nearly Evelyn until Dh started calling her Evil Lynne. You can't unhear that.

Verity - because the one I know is a real cow. Before that I loved the name.

Alison - if DS had been a girl he would have been called Alison but my dad has put me off it now by saying "Alison to the radio" and I can't unhear it.

Teresa - again I know an awful one.

passingover mentioned Arthur at the beginning of the post, i had to rule out Ethan and Martha for the same reason as DH finds it impossible to pronounce " "th" (and also "t" and "h" in words) Hmm
