What names have you been put off?

Jacob. One of our friends uses 'Jacobs' to mean 'goolies.' Sadly, we had already named Jacob before I was aware this was a relatively common usage 😂

If we'd had a daughter I would have called her Madeleine after my Nanna but I think it will now forever be associated with McCann.

Kerry, Sally David, Matthew , Rebecca, Adam, Lauren but pronounced loh ren (a good friend I've known since primary school is pronounced lah-ren),

When pregnant with DD1, I told my mother we were struggling between two names, Isobel and Lydia.
"Oh you can't have either of those:
Isobel - Is a bell necessary on a bicycle,
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo!"

Thanks to a truly abhorrent ex, I am no longer terribly enamoured with the name Nathanael.

Caitlyn (and all the spelling variations) was one of my favourite girls names for a long time, but Caitlyn Jenner has kind of put me off.

When I was twelve, I briefly knew a girl who was called 'Isis', and I remember being insanely jealous of her name because it was so exotic and beautiful... Funnily enough - not so envious now!

Sebastian, not just because the few I've known have been out and out shits but because their parents were always even worse!

Ryan. Love the actor but the co worker Ryan decided to tell everyone at work (I hadn't announced I was pregnant due to fertility issues) I had lost my baby which was why I was off. I hadn't just a severe bladder infection at 18weeks. Unfortunately for him I was the catering chef for the company. He didn't get fed lol

I have always wanted to call my girl Isla. I mean, even as a child, that was the name I picked it out. Yep, if I ever have a girl, she'll be called Isla! That was until I met my husband. We met, fell in love, got married and had 3 beautiful children. 2 boys, 1 girl. I didn't name our daughter Isla, why? Because the man I married, his surname and now my surname is Mann. Work it out people! X

Hepzibar The only Joy I know is a right miserable sod too!

Willow. This was suggested to me loads of times until I pointed out it wouldn't work with our surname (think along the lines of Williams.) Though at least it's not Bush or something

Lyra. Was dead set on this until someone said Lyra Lyra pants on fyra. I couldn't say it without chuckling.

Agree with names not matching owners.

Joy. Only known 2 and they were/ are as miserable as sin.

Me and my friend used to say the Joy in our class should've been called Misery Guts.

She's probably added our names to this thread as 2 bitches she knew in school.

We were gonna call daughter Lotte but I don't always pronounce my Ts properly if they're in the middle of a word so didn't wanna be that common sounding mum at park! 😂 Also Barry, because just why?

Veronica. Never did like that name growing up. I know a lovely Veronica now though. It still makes me think of Veruccas though.

I've taught for a while now and am not put off any names by who I've taught-it would have put potentially hundreds out of bounds. It's the opposite of how lots seem to feel!

I love the name Nicholas but someone pointed out how it sounds like 'knickerless' and now I can't get that out of my head. I liked 'Aoife' and 'Anouk' until my husband replied with, 'E for enormous' and 'A nook and cranny'. Like others have said, I'd avoid names with 'th' in as I hate it when the 'th' is pronounced as 'f'.

My own name which my mother said it sounded French when she named me but lost something when screamed at the top of her lungs in a thick northern accent to come in for tea.
It is also one of those names which even on here is universally hated

My Irish uncle said the same exact thing when my cousin and his wife were considering the name Siobhan!

I loved Huxley, was desperate to call my DS that - till my sister said it just made her think of Huxley Pig. I had never even heard of it but couldn't think of it without adding pig in my head after.

Alexa. We were going to call our daughter this but, thanks to Amazon, we need to find a different name

A friend called her daughter Alexa only months before the Echo came out. She bought one (why?) and now frequently posts on fb about how one or the other Alexa is confused by her requests.

I liked Lola but when I mentioned it to people they started singing the song and I thought I couldn't let my child go through life having a song about a transsexual being sung at them (I was also named after a song and still periodically have it sung at me, even though it's over 50 years old, and over 15 years older than me!).

My DM discounted several names for me because they rhymed with my last name. I love them all and they would have been great if I'd decided to be famous (especially the one that alliterated as well). Yet I discounted a potential name because it rhymed with XP's surname (I wasn't going to take XP's surname for the same reason - my name rhymed with it!).

Other names have been rejected simply because they were associated with people I didn't like. Funnily enough though, other names mentioned on this thread I've liked because I've only ever known nice people with those names (cf. James -
all funny and charming; and Lucy - never met one who isn't a total sweetheart).
