Ezra for a girl?

Hey everyone, i was wondering is the name Ezra acceptable for a girl? I personally think the a ending makes it sound feminine. I know its not common for a girl but more boy names are being used for girls right? I would hate to not be able to use it :/ need some feedback / opinions? Grin

I know of a couple of female Ezras - Ezra Cetin for example .
However my SIL has a boys name - it has caused her many problems - she is routinely confused as male in her job. Like calling a girl George it is kind of difficult for her.

Ezra = boy's name. Seems very male and biblical to me.
You know that other languages don't usually have this rule about name ending in 'a' = feminine, right? That's why over here and in the US we now have loads of female Sashas, though I understand it was originally a Russian male name, the short form of 'Alexander'.

And like a pp said, you wouldn't name a girl Joshua, would you?

Ah, I have heard it before but really didn't know how to spell it. Thanks :) I personally think Lale is super lovely. Similar to Lilah/Lailah/Láila etc and really pretty (plus, there's a imo pretty cool singer called Laleh).

Asra isn't a name but Azra is.

Lale ("tulip") is OK but maybe a bit outdated. I would be careful with a name like Eylem ("political action") - it's usually children of committed communists left-wing activists who get called this name, quite often those born around 1970s-1980s. Similar politically loaded names: Emek ("labour"), Ekin ("harvest"), Nazim (after Nazim Hikmet), Diren ("resist"), Devrim ("revolution"), etc.

Asra?

I know two really fabulous Turkish women called Eylem and Lale. I personally really like these names. But I don't know anything about Turkish names, tbh. So maybe these names are outdated or something...

Cote, just because Esra is a turkish girls name. I prefer with a Z, as esra backwards is a bit rude :) Thanks for the suggestion xxSmile

OP - Just out of curiousity, why give your baby girl not just a boy's name but a Jewish boy's name, if you are Turkish?

There are many beautiful Turkish girls' names.

How about Zehra? (Sounds sort of like Ezra)

I know a girl who named her son Ezra, but her Serbian family gave her stick because it is a girl's name.

I think it is nice for a girl, too and I don't see why people get their knickers in such a twist about names.

Especially as the world will get even more globalised and those safe, classic names will suddenly become awkward in other cultures. I have such a typical British name and I get so many odd spellings and pronunciations because I live abroad. None of that causes me the slightest issue.

Betrand, who is not turkish? I am actually turkish if you are talking to me. I know esra is a turkish name, i said dont like the name Esra as it is rude spelt backwards.

In Bosnia two popular girls names are Azra and Esma.

What about Esme? That's popular here.

Or Zara which has a similar feel.

I also was reminded of the series. Thing is that her generation won't know it that way at all. I was amazed at how quickly my association changed when I met this girl!

Esri? Ermioni? Zora? Riva? (Idk, I'm simply suggesting names that are imo kind of similar...)
