Opinions on boys name Archer

Hi,

We are really struggling for boys names but have plenty girls names.

Opinions on the name Archer for a baby boy - what do you think?

Love it! Our son is called Archer. I think it's a gorgeous name. It's a family name (obviously). No one has sung the Robin Hood theme tune to him yet, but then he is only four.

Ok it sounds like it is quite a marmite name with people either loving it or hating it. I guess a lot of names are like that, and there isn't a name that everyone loves. Plenty of people seem to like it tho. I think we will add it to our short list :)

I have an Archie which is very disliked on MN at the moment and also like Archer, I know one and as far as I know, has no trouble with people mistaking him for an Archie

I like it, and I know of one. When I told the mum how much I liked the name she said she regretted not just calling him Archie as that's what he gets called - people mishear/mispronounce it a lot. Can be down to local accents.

I suppose I just think of an archer being someone who shoots someone with a bow and arrow, like at Agincourt. So it seems rather violent to me, like Hunter. I also (showing my age again) think of Jeffrey Archer. And the meaning of the word 'arch' in the sense of 'knowing, superior, affectedly playful' which isn't great.

But I don't hate it.

It's not my favourite, but I certainly wouldn't judge anyone else for using it. It actually sounds quite middle class to me. We live in Range Rover land which seems to be entirely populated by tiny Saylors, Pipers and Hunters.

Don't like it - it's in the same category as Hunter, Fisher, Carter etc., surnames that very clearly come from occupations that people still do today, so sounds silly as a first name, IMO.

Why not Archie?
