Humphrey?

What do you think of the name Humphrey? I'm concerned it sounds a bit pompous. I also cant think of any good nicknames - any suggestions?

Isn't it a camel name too, or have I made that up? It's very cute for a nice dog or cat. For a human I would expect you to actually be Sir Humphrey or some such Grin

My dog is called Humphrey and I do call him Humps and Humpy and Humpasaurus and Humpty and Sir Humpalot (even though he doesn't ever) so there are definitely a lot of 'hump' related NNs...

Our fifth is Humphrey Andrew. Both myself and my husband love the name and the meaning "Peaceful warrior", although we were originally apprehensive about the inappropriate nicknames we haven't had any comments - but he is only three.

There's a thread on here called 'Names that make your toes curl' and I'm afraid Humphrey would be on it for me...along with Bertie and Ernie. I'm not a fan of old man names but I can appreciate that some are quite cool old man names but this really isn't one of them. I know a little Humphrey who is about 8 or 9 and he sometimes gets called Humph. I just cringe a little every time I hear it. Awful name.

I like it, it's one of my guilty pleasure names, but I wouldn't use it for reasons from previous posts.

Plus my son likes the Humphrey's Corner books so it reminds me of the elephant I'm afraid.

I know a Humphrey - he must be in his late 20s/early 30s. He definitely carries it off, and no-one ever forgets his name! He's Humphrey or sometimes Humf. So I'd say yes, go for it - it's one of those names that actually works really well in practice for me.

My son was at nursery with a Humphrey, my little boy always called him Humpty dumty (in a nice 3 year old way). The name stands out, when he joined beavers I knew who I would see the second the leader said the name.
But really honestly it is seen as a bit of joke name, on hearing it most people have to compose themselves and that is very apparent when I have witnessed introductions.
BTW we are in an area where Persephone and rupert have to add surname initials to paintings as more than one in the class but yep Humphrey has managed to stand out.

The only human who could pull off the name was Humphrey Bogart.

Say "Humphrey" around an Australian person of a certain age and they will immediately picture the slightly creepy Humphrey B Bear.

Ok well I really like it! Classic and cool to me. Similar to Hector or Winston, names I also like. However I'm not sure about Humph.

I had a teacher called Humphrey. We used to call him Humpo and his wife (our Fremch teacher) was Mrs Humpo. Always affectionately known as that and he didn't mind. I quite like it for those reasons but I'm not sure if it is yet due a comeback.
