Bowie or River

Just that really. I want River Nathaniel, dh wants Bowie River. I'm a Bowie fan but ds already has a music heavy name. We're probably considered a pretty alternative couple so these name choices wouldn't be considered out there for us but I'm conscious our child may not be anything like us (although ds is already starting to be). What do you think? Is Bowie useable or will it date terribly?

Bowie is awful.
River David
River Duncan
River Forest
River Henry
River George

Rockaby · 28/03/2017 08:27

How about Beau? It's a little nod to Bowie without being too "look at me I'm waaaay into music" iyswim?

heateallthebuns · 27/03/2017 23:08

Nate is the best out of your list

heateallthebuns · 27/03/2017 23:07

Both awful try hard names sorry!! You did ask.

Heinousfauxpas · 27/03/2017 20:28

another one saying what about Ziggy. For either boy or girl? Im a huge Bowie fan but even I'd have to draw the line at Bowie. But Ziggy I really like. Zig for short.

Not a big fan of River but prefer it to Bowie.

Bibs2014 · 27/03/2017 15:56

I like Bowie and I like River! I wouldn't use them personally but I like them.

crapfatbanana · 26/03/2017 23:04

River. Nature names are good.

Bowie is also the name of a big hunting knife. Not an especially nice thing to think of when cooing to your baby.

bionicant · 26/03/2017 21:37

something normal ime all 'wacky' and 'alternative' couples have very conservative children Grin

Purpledaffodils · 26/03/2017 21:34

Bowie is far too try hard as others have said. River Nathaniel is nice and I also like River for a girl.

SuperBeagle · 26/03/2017 21:09

The Bowie I know is a girl...

I actually like Bowie more than River, but think that River is more usable and accepted than Bowie. So I'd pick River Nathaniel.

Pencilvester · 26/03/2017 20:27

Nathaniel/Nate is lovely Smile

thebakerwithboobs · 26/03/2017 20:27

No you were right the first time and it's STILL massively wanky.

Well, FrenchLavender, he's a beautiful three year old now, well looked after, inquisitive and a delight so I suppose is ME who became less wanky as I realised that his name doesn't matter-other things are far more important. (He now has a little brother called Dylan....)

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/03/2017 20:22

FrenchLavender stop being such an arse.

kingscrossnoodle · 26/03/2017 20:16

Please don't compare child abuse to something so trivial as a name

ArriettyClock1 · 26/03/2017 20:14

Please don't name your child Bowie. It's tantamount to child abuse.

notangelinajolie · 26/03/2017 20:11

Neither of them are very original. If you want your son to have an unusual name pick one that hasn't been done before.

Darlink · 26/03/2017 20:06

Please , just no.

mainlywingingit · 26/03/2017 20:03

Both awful but Bowie is totally try-hard and pretentious.

You'd have to be the coolest superstar to even not really pull that off.

Hercule · 26/03/2017 19:58

here's an idea - what about David?

pretty alternative at the moment - not many Davids around under the age of 40...

SoupDragon · 26/03/2017 19:48

Thank goodness he's backed down on Bowie, that was awful.

River Nathaniel is better!

David Bowies some is Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones apparently. I always thought Zowie was his first name but it seems it never was.

FancyPantsDelacroixTheFirst · 26/03/2017 19:48

What about Mars (Life on...), or Ash (Ashes to Ashes), or Blue (Blue Jean).

Usanayme · 26/03/2017 19:47

TheElephantofSurprise I just chose the first article that came up on Google, as I didn't want to seem like I was spreading gossip when it's true.

TheElephantofSurprise · 26/03/2017 19:39

Bowie and sex article:
"Consent laws are in place because, unlike Mattix, too many underage girls end up traumatized by the sexual experiences they have with older men"
Bollocks. Consent laws are in place because in times gone by men would abduct and rape (or 'seduce') young heiresses to ensure that the girls 'had to marry' them, and through that they would access the girls' wealth. Back in the days when women were the property of men and everything they had became the property of their husbands. It's not about 'for the benefit of women'. It's about 'for the benefit of in-the-family-men who didn't want to lose control of family wealth to an outsider.

MrsCobain · 26/03/2017 19:38

I really wouldn't ask mumsnet for name advice. It's generally very staid and rude.

FrenchLavender · 26/03/2017 19:36

I really like both actually, but then my son's name is Marley

Oh God.
