My go-to fake names for any occasion are always Barnaby and Narcissa.

Trouble is with telling people the real one is then you get their unwanted opinion - it's not the desire to have a big reveal. When I told my auntie which names were on our shortlist for DS, she described what turned out to be his actual name as 'high-falutin'. (It really isn't.) When I mentioned it to her after he was born she claimed to have no memory of saying it, but I never forgot!

We had this with my bonkers mother in law so we had her convinced we were calling our DS Jesus (as in jeesus not the Spanish pronunciation of heyseus!) by month 4 and we didn't tell her the real name until he was born! She was so relieved it was hilarious

Can't remember what we said for a boy but a girl was going to be Anathema. A friend suggested Santa Maria delle Nieve might make a good middle name.
We had boys: I still think rather fondly of my imaginary little Anathema.

After having rude comments on our previous choices we decided to do a "big reveal" when our last was born (not sure what the difference is between that and not actually choosing a name till they're born TBH)

So we told everyone baby would Englebert or Ermintrude.

I'm so fed up with people asking this! Even when I try to evade the question they interrogate me... "Is it an unusual name? is it an English name or a German name? Is it an American name? Is it like DS1's name?" etc...

People might think I'm being secretive for the hell of it but I just don't want to hear unwanted opinions on the name - it's hard enough choosing a name as it is, without relatives chipping in and saying "oh I knew someone's ex boyfriend with that name, he was an arrogant bloke!" or "Hmm I'm not keen, how about something traditional like George?" or "are you serious? it's a bit poncey isn't it?" etc etc...

My grandmother and my dad were both really negative about my son's name even after he was born and made rude remarks about it. So I am pretty sure they wouldn't hold back with the thoughtless comments if I told them any names for my second baby while I'm still pregnant.

My MIL was overly nosy (and would have been judgmental) about names, so when pg with DD, we wound her up with corkers like "Beelzebub" and "Homer". She was half disbelieving/half believing us as we were totally straight-faced every time she asked. She eventually gave up asking and when DD was born and we rang her to say "it's a girl, her name is D", she was so relieved it wasn't one of the previous contenders that she loved the name! Win!

I wouldn't tell people just because I don't really want to hear their opinions on my chosen names. I don't want to be talked out of a name by my relatives, if they don't like it, they will get used to it!!

Alright maybe precious was a bit harsh. And lots of people don't decide until after the birth. But I just find the secrecy when people have decided a bit unnecessary.

I never announced it widely or anything but if anyone asked while I was pregnant I just said it was going to be Mxxxxx or Pxxxxxxx if boy or girl. Don't get why I would refuse to answer just to make a big reveal later.

You just need to be frank, OP. I couldn't be bothered with making up fake names, then the dull, predictable conversation that followed.

thinking of people named after where they were conceived (like Brooklyn, Chelsea and Paris Hilton), try "Bermondsey" "Milton Keynes Travelodge" or "Hearthrug"

Once we knew we were having a girl, we picked a silly name for the bump - think Gertrude. One friend who struggles with social cues told a good friend of mine that we were going to call the baby Gertrude (our actual silly name was ever so slightly more believable), so she started a hilarious conversation with me where she was trying to delicately suggest that there might be a bullying risk, and were we sure we wanted to go with the name. I did come clean and admit we weren't actually planning to call DD that!

Pick one of the current top 5, Sophia and Lucas or Ava and Jackson.

Also, luckily everyone claimed to like it and the grandparents loved it, tbh I think most people I told wouldn't be rude enough to say otherwise and if they had I'd have told them to f**k off!

I think I just told people the real name, so when they asked after the baby or I told them about it I referred to him by his name. He has a traditional name anyway so it's not like if someone steals it then it's going to be too annoying, but it's not super popular either like Jack, Josh or Archie.

We didn't tell, not to be precious, but because we weren't interested in hearing other people's opinions on our choices. If asked, we chucked a few random names out and moved the conversation on.

I said I was going for Harry Potter themed names, so Severus Draco or Sirius for a boy, Bellatrix or Andromeda for a girl.

i had emily or oliver for both (neither on the list) made people swore them to secrecy (and also made them stop talking/asking) had a good few people 'sworn to secrecy' just pick pretty dull names and then people don't ask/comment.
