Names everyone hates

MommaGee · 20/03/2017 01:17

Is it awful to pick a name everyone hates because we like it?
Not pregnant yet bit theoretical conversation about
Illyana
Arianna
Ellianna
Lillianna

Not for quads obviously Lol

For boys were liked
Malachi
Zachariah
Xavier

Are they really that bad?

Only like Arianna, Malachi, and maybe Zachary and Lily instead.

Notso · 21/03/2017 11:27

I've met three Xaviers (Xaviae!?) two were girls and one was previously called Martin so didn't really count. DH wanted it for our DC but I vetoed.
Malachi just reminds me of Malarkey as in 'What's all this malarkey?' (I know it's pron differently)
Zachariah is cool.

Don't like the girls names too frilly for my taste.

I used names my family didn't like though.

buttercup54321 · 21/03/2017 11:03

Don't like any of the fussy type girls names. Zachary is ok but don't like the rest of the boys names.

garlicandsapphire · 21/03/2017 00:47

Cant say I like any of them that much. But its up to you. Check out how they will be shortened though as others have said.

MommaGee · 21/03/2017 00:37

Love Xander

pieceofpurplesky · 20/03/2017 23:52

Xander is a great boys name as is Zach

MommaGee · 20/03/2017 23:42

pmurt We'd go Illyana and Yana, def not Illy

MommaGee · 20/03/2017 23:40

They sound very Russian to my ears. Not that that is a bad thing. I do love Tatiana and Anastasia too haha.

Were actually have a Xavier, and yup Penguin DH's friends think he's a legend for scoring that one. Except I picked it cluelessly. Illiana is also a mutant name, junior mutants or something

PenguinDi · 20/03/2017 18:51

Xavier is prof X to me but that's what comes from having a marvel fan for a DP Smile

Pmurt · 20/03/2017 10:23

I like the names except Iliana. It is OK in full but I know one who is known as Illy which is odd as it sounds like someone who is ill. She spends her entire life saying "no, not Lily, it's Illy with an I"

ArchNotImpudent · 20/03/2017 10:18

I wouldn't say these are names that 'everyone hates' - on the contrary, they seem to be the sort of names that are very fashionable indeed at the moment.

I was expecting to read a list of 70s/80s style names that are regarded as out of fashion/dated at the moment.

Chathamhouserules · 20/03/2017 10:04

All those girls names are a bit ott for my taste. They sound very Russian to my ears. Not that that is a bad thing.
Boys - I like Xavier and Zachary.

Pencilvester · 20/03/2017 10:04

Xavier would get beaten up for his name

Kids are much more accepting and less violent than you think. Plenty of kids have unusual names and no-one bats an eyelid.

PenelopeFlintstone · 20/03/2017 09:57

If you put two Ns in Ariana, people will pronounce it Ari-anna instead of Ari-arna.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/03/2017 09:46

Love your boys names, and like Arianna.

1horatio · 20/03/2017 09:31

Arianna: I like it
Ellianna: Eliana was on my list for DC2... (and is now one the middle name list for that child). Yes, I like the name
Lillianna: I really like Liliana ^

Zachariah: I love this name.

So, yeah... Everybody hates them? Hmm

It's probably really kust your family, yes.

MommaGee · 20/03/2017 08:53

Just my family then, thaws reassuring 😄

BikeRunSki · 20/03/2017 07:43

I don't really like any of your girls names, but I love all your boys names. There's one of each at DS's Cubs!

SuperBeagle · 20/03/2017 07:36

The spelling of the girls names bother me.

Illyana is probably fine, but I just don't like it.

Ariana, Eliana and Liliana are how the others should be spelt. I like Liliana (very pretty - there was a girl when I was in primary school named this and I was forever envious), but not the others.

Zachariah is a bit too Bible Belt America. Zachary is more well-rounded. Smile

Malachi is quite common among Pacific Islanders here, so it brings up a certain image for me. Not a bad thing, of course, but it's a strong association.

Xavier is lovely. I've known a few. The only issue is the pronunciation. Zay-vee-er or Ex-ay-vee-er.

crapfatbanana · 20/03/2017 07:20

Don't tell anyone your name choices until you've named the baby.

My mum was scathing about our name choices but we used them anyway. She admitted recently that she loves the names now and likes telling everyone them!

For what it's worth I like your name choices, particularly the boys'.

Oriana is a P&O cruiser and Illyana reminds me of Italian coffee.

I like Zachary! Xavier is a bit too posh and Malachi...nope.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/03/2017 07:06

I admit I do an inward eye roll with almost any name that isn't fairly plain as it just seems a bit try hard to me. But I'm a grumpy shit and no-one has to listen to me thankfully
I agree all the excess Ls and Ns looks like you didn't know when enough was a good thing.
I also think that diminutives will ALWAYS out. I know a few people who insist that their child is called Andrew/Primrose/Zachariah etc and they without exception get called Andy/Rose/Zach by their peers. So make sure you're happy with Arrie and Ellie because that's what will happen.

CactusFred · 20/03/2017 06:58

I know an Oriana which fits in with your list. I like it. The girls names on the list are worse than the boys ones. The boys ones are actually 'proper' names not made up ones.

None of the names are awful though.

NashvilleQueen · 20/03/2017 06:50

Ariana is a nice name but at the moment almost exclusively linked to Ariana Grande so everyone will assume that's your motivation. If you're happy with that then go for it.
