Spelling it out?

I know having to spell it out puts some people off a name, but how often would you need tondo this?

When do people usually have to make sure their first name is spelled correctly and how often does this actually occur?

Constantly. First and second name.
I also do the fake name thing - esp in Starbucks and similar places!

I always have to spell my name and people constantly mispronounce it but I love it and wouldn't change it for anything!

One of my dds has a popular name that can be spelt two ways - she's managed to get to the age of almost 12 without it being a blight on her life. I think going through primary school there were a few people in her class that never got it right but she didn't care, they only wrote her name on a Christmas card, they weren't friends. She's started secondary - a few teachers started the year spelling it the other way, she just scored it out if for example they had written it in a homework book and she wrote it how she spelt it.

I think now with texting, FB and social media people see your name written down a lot more so they are aware of how you spell it earlier if that makes sense

For anything official. It's an ordinary, well-known name, but can be spelled two different ways (like Abby/Abbie), so I usually get asked which.

I have a common surname (as in, in the top 5 most common surnames) but it has several variants spelling-wise, so I always have to spell it out.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I love my name, but it is unusual and so I always have to spell it out Which happens really quite often. I guess less so now as I don't tend to leave messages for people anymore as I can usually email them instead, but whenever I phone anyone with a reception I always have to spell it, and then they usually get it wrong or are unsure enough not to tell the person I'm ringing and so I have to spell it out again. Which is kind of irritating. Oh and I get letters/parcels and emails misspelled all the time. Which is problematic for emails as it means I don't actually get them.

I use my dds name at Starbucks, and anyone else I'm booking with for reservations. That said dd has a really simple, common name and also gets it misspelled as there are now so many variations with everyone wanting to put their own touch to it.
