I actually really like the name Emmet. I have a 2 year old dd so not yet been introduced to the Lego world, maybe that would change things?

I think eventually every single name will have an association with something, and children's Tv and literature is quite expansive now so many will be featured here. I do think Elmo is a no go however! Most people wouldn't be able to keep a straight face. Plus babies do grow, so what's cute as a toddler ends up as an 18 year old horny adult with a breaking voice named Elmo.

In my dds nursery class there is a boy named Omar, dd calls him Elmer as she can't say his name, I always picture a small multi coloured elephant charging round the class

Emmett to me will always be the time travelling Dr Emmett Brown from Back to the Future.

I am weeping at 'there's loads of people called Bert or Ernie'.

My 2yos comforter is Elmo and all the children at his playgroup and dd's school know who it is (it has been returned countless times by very kind older children and they always say 'here's your Elmo back'. I wouldn't use the name for a child. Maybe for a puppy.

Grover is also a Sesame Street character! You are naming a person that will live for an average of 80 years so it must be a name that is acceptable for children and adults.
Elmo is a cute red puppet not a name you can give to a child.

You and your DH may well be the only people on the planet who do not know who Elmo is.

Elric and Clinton would be strange choices.

Elmer is Elmer Fudd. You can't do that to a child.

Emmett is basically an Irish surname name inspired by the patriot Robert Emmett. And also the Lego Movie character. I don't think 50s America at all when I see it.

Anton is another Irish name - translates to Anthony. It's also Anthony in a few other languages (German, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Dutch, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Slovene, Macedonian, Croatian, Romanian, Estonian, Finnish)... I think it's my favourite of your boy list though I like Gabriel too. I don't think it's all that popular. It was about 10 to 15 years ago around here.

Emmett is nice though, OP. I also like Everett and Ellis, along the same vein.

Even without Sesame Street, Elmo is an awful name.

Honestly, all of your names sound quite outdated. At a push, I'd pick Erica and Gabriel. But I'm not a fan.

Emmett is really nice. I couldn't call a baby Elmo, most people in the uk and us will make the sesame street connection. Elmo has been super famous for generations, its not even like peppa pig where at least people without kids won't make the connection. Most people under a certain age will jump straight to big furry red puppet! Which is a shame because it is a nice name.

I mean, depending on the child they may love the association. An other child may be bullied viciously. It's a bit of a gamble...

Horatio You have to remember that you aren't naming a child, you're naming an adult. A cute kid might not mind the Sesame St connection but a shy teenager or adult might well hate it.

I think you'll get the Elmo association in every country that screens Sesame Street, so USA, Canada, Australia and probably a load of others. He's such a main character. He's very 'imitate-able' plus there is the 'tickle me' thing too.
