Favourite Welsh name?

This isn't for a baby, but for a curiosity.

For me:

Boy - Emrys

Girl - Bronwyn

*Rockaby" it's a genuine Welsh name, though seems to have been used more in eastern Wales as a nickname for Gruffudd, whereas Gutyn and Guto were more common further west. The spelling Griffin is Anglicised (as I say, it would be Gruffyn in Welsh), just as Griffith is the Anglicised spelling of Gruffudd.

Gwenhwyfar, which is the original form of Guinevere, but obviously I know it's completely unusable. I wish that wasn't the case though!

Esyllt for a girl.

Aneurin or Gethin for a boy. Or Iestyn or Taliesin. So many great names.

We have a Welsh surname so DH vetoed anything too Welsh for DCs sadly.

Thanks for responding; I actually asked if it was properly Welsh, not if it was a proper name... of course I know it's a proper name! Smile

Your post is exactly what I was talking about. It comes from the Welsh but, has it been anglicised? Similar to Padraig and Patrick for example? That's what I was asking.

Some of the old Welsh nicknames are fab. Bedo for Maredudd (Meredith), the origin of the surname Beddoes. Maredudd / Meredith is most definitely a boy's name, second element 'udd' means 'lord', same as first element in Idris

I wish I could have used Einion or Elidir for a boy, Heledd for a girl.

The only Eos I know is male! There are a lot of names that go either way in Welsh though it seems. Wyn as a middle name is everywhere.

I wanted an Idris, Megan was my favourite girls name but now there are loads I'm glad I have boys. Arwel is beautiful, Gwilym an old but goody, Rhodri my favourite, Teifi/Teifion popular round here. Tanwen is amazing (white fire, if I had my time again and a girl that's what I'd go for!).

Not sure how I'd feel about having the nickname Blod I had 2 Gt gt Auntie Blodwen's they had the nn Win/nie & Lou. Lou's little brother couldn't say Blodwen when he was little but somehow made the nn Lou out of it Hmm.

I like Ceridwen & Siân for girls & Ieuan or Glyn for boys.
