Child changing their name...

My DD wants to change her name for various reasons and I completely understand why and am allowing her to do so.

The question is how do you go about picking a new name?

She can't decide on one she likes, so we are all a bit stuck! Is a nickname sort of name better and easier to catch on? Sorry this seems like a bit of a pointless question ://

there are several international variation of susan, which would lend itself well to nn
Susannah = Hanna
Suzette = Annet (sp)

yeah i don't really want to share her name! but do like the suggestion of sunny, & eden, trying to think of an unconnected nickname nowGrin xx

As a sort of nickname from her original name (which you said was similar to Susan, unless Susan was just an example of a name in which case ignore me Grin )

I really like Eden though its a really nice name it also reminds me of names like

Maayan
Maya
Sienna

Seeing as the name is this uncommon it would probably be outing to tell us(although it would make the whole nickname business easier)?

But nicknames sometimes (often, in my experience, tbh) have absolutely no connection with the actual given name of a person. Or just a very weird one.

not too keen on suki or brooke thanks though! & there are actually no nicknames online as it is very very uncommon:(

Could you look up various nicknames /versions of her name? Or does she want something totally different.

Zanna could be a nice shortening/nickname? Or Suki?

Well, DD is Clarissa. NN Chippie/Chip/Clary.

I know a Clementine callied Aprie. DH works with a woman called Minty/Mintie (no idea how she spells it). Her given name is just a normal name.

Binkie's actual name is... Wait. I'm pretty sure it's actually Victoria. Idk. English nicknames seem often rather random (in my non-English opinion)

I think it would be lovely if you still had a say in her name choice? Your name is a gift from your parents in a way, fair enough she wants to change it.

Has she gave you a shortlist if names she likes?

Didn't read thread properly. Blush. I see that she is 17 so old enough to make up her own mind. Don't know why but I assumed she was about 8 or 9. Just before she goes to Uni does sound like a good time but there will be folk who will still call her by her old name I expect like relatives. Names are such a personal thing so one persons favourite might be somebody else's pet hate. Hope you find something just right.

I know somebody called Binky. But her "actual" name is totally normal (a classic). And it doesn't even start with a B ;)

I changed my name when I was 8... to a TV character I liked.

Binky means dummy (pacifier) in the USA. Not that one.

Well, next year OPs DD will be 18 and can legally change her name whenever she wants to! It's not quite the same as a 4-year-old who wants to be called Princess Buttercup.

I really like Susannah.

Did they move to Italy and her name is Gallina? Eh...

Or maybe the name reminds her of something really painful.

Or is just not pronounceable in English.

ihatethedailymail, viv, she has always hated her name, gets mispronounced. very similar too her sisters. hard to pronounce. she just wants to change it and i dont see why not. she is mature and we aren't going to legally change it until we are very sure of the name :)
