My parents gave me a unique name. I have never met anyone else, (in person), with the same first name.
I have spent my life spelling it out, correcting people's pronunciation of it, answering questions about its origins, and giving fixed smiles as people say, "Wow, that's weird/unusual/funny/different".
I'm used to it now and wouldn't change it as my mum would be upset, but I bloody hated it for years. When you're a kid and all you want to do is fit in, a unique name will forever mark you out as 'different'. Please think carefully. Names can be beautiful and uncommon without being completely 'out there'.

reuset · 10/03/2017 14:01

I think you're right Grin

Rockaby · 10/03/2017 13:50

Reuset

Highlander would be a very unique name for a girl Wink.

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 13:36

Mimosa is actually quite nice, isn't it?

There is of course the association with lunch... But still, there are way worse names imo ;)

reuset · 10/03/2017 13:22

Are we ignoring the fact that someone on the first page suggested mimosa?

Oh yes Grin

Gaah to 'unique' there is no 'very' or 'quite', unless you're using the wrong word. That's why I suggested Oiboiblxnk.

A poster recently asked about a name which had only ever been used once (as I discovered) I didn't even suggest that because if OP used it it would no longer be unique. There can be only one! I've a feeling I quoted something there.

solittletime · 10/03/2017 12:26

Scarlet?

Nanasueathome · 10/03/2017 12:24

My nephew's new baby girl is called Siellah

OhDearToby · 10/03/2017 12:20

My parents gave me a unique name (at the time anyway, it's quite popular now). There were only two babies in Scotland given the name the year I was born. One was me and one was my classmate at my very small rural primary school Grin

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 10:52

Not sure... I mean genuinely unique? That has to be a made up name...

DD is already unique, there's no need for a name that emphasises this :)

But I also like slightly unpopular names.

phoebe2016 · 10/03/2017 10:34

Thank you Chardonnay.

Pencilvester · 10/03/2017 10:33

Can anyone explain to me why they want a unique name for their child?

I am interested to find out, too. I love unusual names, but unique is another story entirely. It seems quite lordly and high-handed to want your child to be the only person on Earth with that name.

Fruitcocktail6 · 10/03/2017 09:17

Are we ignoring the fact that someone on the first page suggested mimosa?

Purplebluebird · 10/03/2017 08:58

Iselin :)

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 10/03/2017 08:48

It's very pretty, though, Phoebe.

00100001 · 10/03/2017 08:45

phoebe2016 · 10/03/2017 08:37

Lmao Chardonnay! Grin

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 10/03/2017 07:02

So that's Janaya off the list then, there's already at least one.
Grin

phoebe2016 · 10/03/2017 06:34

My DD is called Janaya and i have not come across another one so far, in the UK.

RuthB4 · 10/03/2017 06:09

00100001, Erena is a real name! Grin

marcopront · 10/03/2017 01:14

Can anyone explain to me why they want a unique name for their child?
I am sure I read someone here who choose an unusual name for their child and then found two others in their class at school with that name.
So if your criteria for picking a name includes it being unique, what will you do if you find it isn't unique, rename your child?

reuset · 10/03/2017 01:03

Magnolia is beautiful

A shame the paint isn't Grin
