Anyone know any Patricks and if so does their name get shortened? I love it but hate Pat and Rick and not keen on Paddy (not Irish in the slightest, assume Paddy would perceived to be Irish?)
Having written all that, guess Patrick would be a daft option Hmm

Mine is Pat on the football pitch.....it's nice and easy to yell.

I guess Pat would be the most natural shortening (for other kids) if at all.

I like it. There are plenty of Davids, Georges and Andrews in Ireland so you don't have to be Irish.

Names don't need to be shortened. I think Patrick is nice as it is. I don't really like any of the nicknames much esp Pat, Patsy, Paddy, Patchy or Trick.

It's Jeremy John treaclesoda. He got nicknamed Paddy because of his accent when he moved to England.

Paddy Ashdown is actually called Jeremy or John or James or something like that. Something with a J I think. He's called Paddy because he spent part of his childhood in N Ireland and when he went to school in England he got nicknamed Paddy because of where he had come from. Not particularly relevant to naming a baby but I just noticed a previous poster citing him as an example of a non Irish Paddy.

Anyway, Patrick is a lovely name. The younger men or boys I know with this name tend to be called Patrick and the older ones seem to be known as Paddy or Pat.

I adore the name Patrick, but I really don't like any of the nicknames. So I used it as a middle name for DS2.

Having said which you're right, if you don't want the perception of Irishness maybe any kind of Patrick is best avoided Grin

I only know much older 'Pats'. Of the below-40 Patricks that I know, 3 are 'Patrick' and one is 'Paddy', but he is Irish.

Any my kids go to school with are just Patrick - never shortened. I know a few older Pats, no Paddys (for the same reason as Bertrand mentioned) and I've never known it to be shortened to Rick. It's a lovely name - we have a few in our family.

Patrick is a very nice name. I've known a few.

Most have been Paddy, one was Pat and the other was a colleague who was always Patrick at work, though possibly he was something else at home.

Grin my Patrick's first independent, clearly vocalized decision was a complete and immediate veto on the name Patch. He was about 2!

I know three 4/5 year olds called Patrick who are just known as Patrick. The Patricks I know who are my age are all known as Paddy but their families call them Patrick! I'm Irish- not sure if it would different elsewhere!

I have 5 month old twins and my son is Patrick. We call him Patrick and Paddy, either or really. My OH's cousins wee boy (2 years old) tried to say his name the other week and came out with Patch so that's what he shouts anytime he sees him.

I love the name Patrick and was planning to call my baby that if I'd had a boy.

It is a name that is classless and it works well in many different languages too!

I know 2 Patricks (60 ish and 10 ish) who are just Patrick.

My friend Patrick is Patch. He's a musician and it really suits him.

I know a baby Patrick who is absolutely my favourite baby ATM, he is a sturdy , solemn faced,thoughtful and totally gorgeous little chap. He is definitely a Patrick, no nicknames for him, he would just give you The Look.

DS is Patrick and family/friends of family have never shortened it, however all his friends call him Paddy and that's how he introduces himself.

Obviously I like it very much, and it's a family name on DH's side -- 2nd generation Irish. Both versions suit him, IMO.

Also I don't think Paddy is necessarily seen as Irish -- e.g. Paddy Ashdown, the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, also known as Paddy. Racing driver Paddy McNally (Sarah Ferguson's squeeze before she married Andrew.)
