Is it too similar to the all-too-popular Ava?

Decided that my original far out choice is better for a middle name but we still want something that means something to us.

DH is a computer programmer and I am an admirer of women who give zero fucks so we've come across Ada Lovelace.

I quite like it but DH is less sure as he is not really a of a fan of "old fashioned" names (he vetoed Alice and Iris).

Thoughts?

Ada reminds me of Robbie Williams wife, which isn't a bad thing as she's beautiful :)

Love Ada - DH doesn't but hoping to squeeze it in as a middle name if we have a DD.

I'm surprised so many people see it as strong - i think it quite the opposite. It's a bit flimsy or insubstantial in my reading; as if you wanted the minimum number of sounds or letters to make a name.

I also don't think it works as a nickname for Adelaide or similar as the vowel sound is very different.

Two slightly similar suggestions, both Irish, are Eadaoin and Ailbhe - pronounced and sometimes spelled as Aideen, and Alva.

Love it, beautiful name but also quite a cool feel I think as well as just vintagey - if that might help persuade your DH?! I also prefer it to Ava and don't think it's too similar.

I like Ada.

I don't see it as particularly old fashioned. Iris is certainly more old fashioned, IMO. But I know a few "young" Adas (DH is Norwegian and it's a relatively popular name there).

I love it. It was my Grandma's name and on both our lists if we'd been able to have kids. A strong name for a strong, and interesting, woman.

Personally I don't think Ada sounds old-fashioned. I think because it's such a short, simple name - it seems pretty timeless to me. Plus I don't know anyone of my grandparents' generation with the name (and that's what would usually make me think of a name as being old-fashioned).

I'm torn between Ada and Thea at the moment for dc3 (if a girl obvs!). I love Ada, it was my Grandma's name with middle name Elizabeth, which is dp grandma's name. Both formidable women! Just not sure if it will suit a tween/teen/young adult -is it too old fashioned??

Love Ada. We've just found out we're having a boy but if it was a girl, it would have been either Adeline or Adelaide, nn Ada.

I have one, and although there's one person of our aquaintance who insists on calling her Ava (you know when you fail to correct someone and kick yourself later? Grin) being mistaken for an Ava isn't a common occurrence.

She suits her name perfectly. She's strong and opinionated and definitely gives zero fucks Wink She could also write her name at the age of three, because it's nice and simple!

I know an 18-month-old Ada, I think it's a nice, sweet, strong name. It's not too close to Ava.

It was my great-gran's name, actually she hated it and went by one of her middle names! I like it though.

I like it. I know a 2 year old Ada and a baby Adeline who is increasingly being called Ada. It's much nicer than Alice and Iris imo.

If your DP isn't keen on vintage names would he consider Ida but pronounced European way as Ee-dah

Have always loved it, since I was a teenager and read Bleak House.
Ada Lovelace is a very cool namesake.
