Esca - Celtic meaning: River
We are considering it for either boy or girl i.e as unisex name. Thoughts??

I think people would misshear it and your kid would forever be saying "No not Oscar, Esca"

NeepNeepNeep · 22/02/2017 17:36

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esca_(grape_disease)

No from me. What about Mary? I hear it's due a come back.

Namehunting001 · 22/02/2017 17:34

Tile, thank you - That is something for me to seriously consider, you are right x

Bogburglar75 · 22/02/2017 17:30

Eagle of the Ninth! Grin Suspect a lot of Rosemary Sutcliff fans will make that association, but as long as that's not a problem?

I think it would have to be a boys name for me for that reason, but apart from that, lovely.

TileTileTile · 22/02/2017 17:26

I like it, sounds nice , BUT I have an unusual Celtic name and outside of Scotland no one can pronounce it. I have to repeat it and spell it several times a day which is annoying, and often people think I have misspelt my own name (!) and they change it to something similar but more common. I think Esca will get called Esther a lot! For these reasons I would avoid. I wish my parents had named me something different Envy

headake · 22/02/2017 17:18

River is a nice name for a lad.

FartnissEverbeans · 22/02/2017 17:13

Namehunting001 Grin

helensburgh · 22/02/2017 15:32

Love it. Sounds masculine to me.

INeedNewShoes · 22/02/2017 15:30

Makes me think of French 'Est-ce que' which sounds the same and means 'Is it' !

Or a nickname for Francesca

Namehunting001 · 22/02/2017 15:26

Fartniss - it makes you the perfect judge!!!

FartnissEverbeans · 22/02/2017 14:47

I like it a lot, for a girl or a boy. But people have thought my son has a girls' name in the past (he doesn't! It just ends in A!) so I may not be the best judge Grin

Namehunting001 · 22/02/2017 14:44

@Pharisienne Do it! I am the same, the more i think about it, the more i like it.

Are there any unisex names that people out there love? I am keeping an open mind... :D

SeveredPixieBits · 22/02/2017 14:43

I like it. I've never heard it before and I wasn't sure when I read your opening post but it's grown on me in the time it took to read the thread!

DoloresVanCartier · 22/02/2017 14:34

I like it but not for a boy

EggsEleven · 22/02/2017 14:33

I keep wanting to say 'mo' at end of it.

It sounds as if you've paused half way through saying 'Eskimo'

RedSauce · 22/02/2017 14:31

I've never heard it but I like it a lot! Love it, actually.

I can't decide if it sounds more like a girls name (ends in a) or a boys name (sounds like oscar and ezra mixed together)

bobbis · 22/02/2017 14:30

I like it for a girl :) Personally couldn't see it as a boys name

2014newme · 22/02/2017 14:29

It sounds short for Jessica

LaPharisienne · 22/02/2017 14:27

I've been thinking about this name and I love it so much I may nick it if I have any more babies!

Batteriesallgone · 22/02/2017 14:25

Rare unisex names are a bit risky because it only takes one major film or celebrity to feminise or masculinise it and your child might end up on the wrong side of that.

Namehunting001 · 22/02/2017 14:24

LOVE IT!! Gorgeous name! For boy or girl - original and cool IMO

Enidblyton1 · 22/02/2017 14:08

Tbh I'm not a huge fan. I love the name Esther though (or Ezra for a boy) - somehow easier on the ears to me.

Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 14:05

Thank you very much everyone! Yes I do get the 'Esca-late' 'escalator' etc but I'm not too fussed about that side of things tbh..
Constant having to spell did also cross my mind - but then again isn't that the case with most 'rare' names? Hmm good points though!!

I really like it.

Wasn't the male character the Jamie Bell plays in "The Eagle"
called Esca?

Batteriesallgone · 22/02/2017 14:03

I like it, sounds like a girls name to me.
