Meredith and Evelyn

Hi everyone, would love your opinions on these two please. Current shortlist is -

Matilda (Mattie)
And Imogen

Having trawled the Internet for inspiration incase we missed any other dh has decided he likes Evelyn (to be pronounced ever-lyn). I'm not keen on Evie though and thinking people might naturally shorten it to that?

Also remembered Meredith which I think is lovely (probably shortened to Meri) but I don't know any at all (other than from the murder case which isn't the best association) and I'm quite a 'safe' person generally. Son has a fairly common, traditional name and I'm not sure it goes?

Meredith is lovely and as a pp said, what about Merryn??

I have a 12 year old Evelyn. She shortens it to Ally. It does seem to have become much more popular as a name - it was outside the top 100 when I named her.

Love Meredith and Imogen but the latter seems to be getting more popular all the time.

The Meri I know is a Meriel.

I'd have the same reservation about Evelyn (the Eev-lyn I know is male).

I have a Meredith - six weeks after she was born another family in our village also named their baby Meredith - they share a middle name too.

When she was born my Dad said she'll go far with that name - it's a good strong name Grin

Thanks Madame and mouth- both nice names but just don't do anything for me if you know what I mean? It's strange how some give you a kind of 'feeling' and other equally nice names don't.

Also wondering about Meryn?? But I'm supposed to be shortlisting not adding to the list!

Meredith is beautiful, my favourite of all your names. I do like Evelyn but only pronounced Ever-Lynn so I wouldn't use it as correcting all the time would get annoying.

How about Miranda? Another gorgeous name and I don't think I've ever met a baby Miranda

Also love Tabitha but dh says it's a cat name, so that one is out! I don't think I love Evelyn but may add Meredith to the short list.

I love Imogen! That name was my first choice for DD but it doesn't work well in French.

I like both. Meredith may be uncommon but it's a well-known, traditional name. Meri is very sweet!

Ah okay sorrel, I'd rather steer clear of too popular, so that's another mark against it!

Strawberry yes that is also a consideration, not overly keen on the alternative pronounciation.

Ooh I love both Evelyn and Meredith! I don't think Meredith is that uncommon so you shouldn't worry about it not going with your son's name. I think Evie is a lovely nn for Evelyn, but it's got to sit right with you of course.

Love Meredith. Not so keen on Evelyn just because there are different ways of pronouncing it and you will be forever correcting people

There aren't many girls NOT called Evelyn round here.
