GIRLS names I'm considering

DaaMamma · 18/02/2017 23:33

What do you think about these names?
Be as stark/direct as you like: I'll know it's the one if the harsher comments don't bother me.

Alternatives welcome.
Prefer names that don't end in -a

The shortlist as it stands:

Kate
Natalia
Juliet
Genevieve
Miriam

Thanks

Juliet is my favourite of these - by quite a lot. It's classic and it doesn't end in E or A like so many girls' names, so it sounds a "strong" name. I know a mega-successful Juliet, so perhaps I'm biased.
Kate is too nondescript.
Genevieve is just weird - I can only think of the car in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Natalia sounds very Russian - but nice. Natalie? Natasha?
Miriam is old-fashioned. I'm not sure it's time has come again yet. Mariam? Marian?

JunebabyT · 23/02/2017 19:38

I would pick Juliet from these but all are good

Purplebluebird · 21/02/2017 16:59

My top list:
Miriam
Natalia
Juliet
Kate (Katie)
Genevieve

MommaGee · 21/02/2017 16:57

Kate - nice but harsh for a baby - maybe kaitlyn shortened to Katie then Kate?
Natalie - I'd shorten it to tallie ut I do like it
Julie - lifetime of romeo comments?
Genevieve - love love love a D K ow a lovely adult one
Mariam -. Would assume named after a parent but not in a cool old lady way like Elsie or Edith

HeteronormativeHaybales · 21/02/2017 16:51

Miriam is my favourite. I like Natalia too but you said you'd rather not have an -a name. Genevieve's too long to go with a Rosa, and I'm not keen anyway.

How about
Frances
Lucy
Beatrice
Cleo
Maren (longish 'a')
Claire (very underused these days, due a revival IMHO)
Emily

DaaMamma · 21/02/2017 13:23

Thanks also to the name suggesters. I like lots of them....especially XANTHE. More food for thought.

I like Miriam best. It's pretty and underused. I also like Juliet and Natalia.

Lucy
Harriet
Merryn
Coralie
Clementine
Frances
Sophie
Talia
Meredith
Emily
Phoebe
Xanthe
Seren
Alice
Grace
Rachel
Louise

MollyHuaCha · 20/02/2017 22:45

All nice. I consider Kate to be a nn. I love Juliet and Miriam.

AdaColeman · 20/02/2017 22:45

Juliet is my favourite, with Genevieve a very close second.

I'm not keen on Miriam, a bit too Biblical for my taste.

DaaMamma · 20/02/2017 22:39

Thanks everyone. You've been very helpful. I think Miriam ticks every box. But I do see what some posters mean about it sounding fusty. I only know 1 Miriam and she is a bit sanctimonious so I don't know if that has influenced me. I need to sleep on it.
I've gone off Kate a bit and of course every time I google it it's all Kate Middleton....
Gone off Natalia....well I still think it's nice but it's not right for my daughter.
Juliet......I love the strong t sound at the end, the fact everyone knows it but there aren't tonnes of them. I just wish the Romeo & Juliet connection wasn't quite so all-encompassing.
Genevieve has got a lot of positive comments and yet.....I don't know. It reminds me of Veronica or Rita or something else.......holy.
I'm getting there. Thanks again

I really like your list, though I'm not overly keen on Natalia. In order I would say:

  1. Miriam - lovely and everyone I've met with this name has been awesome.
  2. Kate - love this too. It's a strong name, which I like.
  3. Genevieve - very nice, but maybe a little fussy compared to the others. I do really like it though, and like Ginny as a nn. Is Ginny Weasley from HP's full name Genevieve?
  4. Juliet - I'm not all that keen on this. I don't like the reference to Romeo and Juliet really and I just don't like the sound. It's too much like Julia which I also dislike.
  5. Natalia - not keen on this either, though, it has been tainted for me by knowing a really horrible one. I know a fantastic Natalie, so prefer that! Still not my favourite though.
EggsEleven · 20/02/2017 15:06

I love Juliet. I prefer Mirren or Meredith to Miriam though Miriam is OK too.

I'm not keen on any of your other choices.

firawla · 19/02/2017 23:45

Miriam is lovely

CakeRattleandRoll · 19/02/2017 23:44

Love Miriam.
Genevieve and Juliet are also beautiful.

Elspeth
Felicity
Josephine
Mary
Vivienne

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/02/2017 09:46

Rosa and Juliet
Rosa and Miriam
Rosa and Marianne.

Rosa and Miriam is my favourite.

DaaMamma · 19/02/2017 08:50

Thanks everyone. Yes, I also like Marianne, Sistafromanuthamista

I really like Kate. I've not met a baby Kate

smilingsarahb · 19/02/2017 08:13

Kate, Nat, Jules, Gen and Mimi. Which of those do you prefer as that's what they will probably get called. I'm not a very useful name person as I like most names to be honest. If pushed I'd say Kate is a bit dull but I wouldn't actually think that if someone introduced a Kate to me.

Gottabeaneasierway · 19/02/2017 08:04

I like them all apart from Miriam which is very old-fashioned.

Sistafromanuthamista · 19/02/2017 08:01

I love Juliet

I prefer Marianne to Miriam

Jooni · 19/02/2017 07:07

Genevieve, Miriam and Juliet are my favourites, in that order. Lovely list!

Eastwestbestrest · 19/02/2017 05:24

Love Juliet and Genevieve.

Natalia is nice but I prefer Natalie.

Kate is a bit boring.

Hate Miriam - it has a smug, dull sound to it.

SuperBeagle · 19/02/2017 01:49

Kate - My favourite. Still upset that there's already a Kate in my family as Kate would've been DD1's name otherwise. Gorgeous, glamorous, timeless etc.

Natalia - I like this in full, but fear it would get shortened to Nat, which is awful.

Juliet - Love this. I've heard Jet as a nickname, which is very cool.

Genevieve - Love this as well. Lots of nickname potential: Gen, Genna, Genny, Viv, Vivi, Evie, Eve etc.

Miriam - Don't like this. Sounds quite old and fuddy duddy to my ears.

Naomi - Love this. But all of the Naomis I've known have got "Nomes" as a nickname (pronounced gnomes), which is less nice.

Waterfeature · 19/02/2017 00:11

Kate -- bit boring and prefer the full name
Natalia -- too Russian
Juliet -- wet
Genevieve -- pretty and unusual
Miriam -- pretty
Naomi -- very plain, and "I moan" backwards!

Good luck!

DaaMamma · 19/02/2017 00:04

I still have a few weeks to decide. Thank you for all your help so far.
