Eugenie?

I don't understand why I never hear it.
I think it's pretty (heard a lot worse) but have yet to meet a little Eugenie. Not seen it suggested on here either.
Does Sarah Ferguson hold the licence or am I the only one who likes it?

I would pronounce it You-jean-ee I think it sounds nice that way but the other pronunciations would put me off.

Princess Eugenie pronounces it with the emphasis on the first syllable: like 'USE yer knee'.

I taught a Eugenie. She was a lovely girl. Not keen on the name though.

I was at college with a girl called Eugenie. This was in the 1980s so before Princess Eugenie was born .

I thought it was pronounced you-gene-ee... I'm Scottish if that makes a difference.
I don't think it's a very pretty name. I like Beatrice though.

Strange though, type of name MN would normally be all over. Seems like the Princess connection has killed it.

Horrible name. Some odd pronunciations. How are you pronouncing it, OP?

Persephone follows different pronunciation 'rules' not difficult to get right, especially if you know it is Greek.

It probably doesn't help that the only Eugenie I've heard of is the princess.

(Beatrice, on the other hand, is a name I've come across in other places, so I've got other connotations with that which dilute the royal connection)

There's also the tennis player Eugenie Bouchard but iirc she was named after Princess E as her mum's a royal family nut.

Omg. Her twin's name is Beatrice, and her other siblings are also named after royals. That's the cringiest thing I've read this year.

I remember when Princess Eugenie was born and my mum saying it's a lovely name but they're pronouncing it all wrong, it should be “oo-je-NEE". Unlike a pp I find it quite pretty written down but find the anglicised "yoo-janey" jarring and you'd never get people to say it the "proper" way this side of the channel.

i like it and also go with Yoo-Jane-Nee but with a french sounding Je for Jane but I think it's one of those names that people don't really know how to pronounce and potentially think the Je bit makes it pretentious (well maybe just the people I know)

I don't like Persephone either. It's also ugly sounding.

Beatrice is popular, so I don't think the royals have anything to do with it.

But is it any worse in pronunciation and looks than say Persphone, which is always getting suggested?
I suspect it would be far more popular if it didn't have the Royal connection.

It's always been pronounced yoo-genie where I'm from.

In French, it sounds a bit like aw-zhenny. I only know this because there was a Eugenie (Greek) in my French class at uni and I thought her name was Jenny for a long time.

The pronounciation faff puts me off, as an OP said. Along with the lazy Duke of York and his grim ex wife (although the daughters seem pleasant, in fairness).
