Help me on my treacherous journey to naming DD?

We're having a baby girl!

I have always wanted Lydia but all this ''Lydia Chlamydia" has put me right off.

Love Diana but have been put off recently but the nn Di.

I love Otillie... Dislike Lottie and Tilly so won't be using it.

Like Helen, it's my mum's name, but have been put off by countless novels representing every Helen as a push over/the naive one. Dislike Helena.

Like Athena... Only name DP really agrees on that I'll have.

Like Odette, DH says no way.

Love Posey but understand it is very flowery and unsuitable for a woman.

DH adores Alice but it reminds me of "a lice"

Any suggestions? I like unusual names but nothing tacky/cheap!

I love Helen, Lydia, Athena, Frances and Alice so we have similar tastes. If you choose Helen I think you will be ahead of the curve, as it's actually uncommon for babies now although a well known and recognised name.

I like Athena more than Lydia when I can be completely objective about it.

But, as I currently only know 1 of each and the Lydia is the most delightful child ever whereas the Athena is ... less so, I think I'm biased towards Lydia.

Other classic kind of ideas (sorry for any repeats; I've tried to avoid them):

Posy is sometimes used as a nickname for Josephine which I think is a beautiful and underused name.

Instead of Helen how about Eleni?

And instead of Lydia you could have Lydie, which I love - I think it's very chic!

In place of Alice, how about Alix/Alixe? That's a royal name in Europe. Alessandra is also beautiful. Maybe Elysia?

Athena is very cool but a tricky name to carry. I'd love to meet one.

Nobody will ever use Fanny for Frances! I don't think there's any worry of that. She would undoubtedly be Fran though.

I wouldn't let the nicknames put you off Lydia is lovely. My name is Diane and only one person has ever called me Di - the death stare they got helped enormously!

I do love Lydia but it appears it's quite popular! I use to think it was nice and classical, yet very underused. Perhaps not.

I would just hate for her to have another Lydia in her class... Portentous and precious I know.

My top girls name is Lydia if this baby is a girl! I don't care what it rhymes me, my own name could be rhymed with some unpleasant things but it never ever has been. Nobody called Chris ever gets called 'Chris Piss' do they, I think it's a pointless worry.

Anyway seeing as we have similar taste, my other names are Hazel, Phoebe, Erica and Robyn!

I've met my first Athena and she's lovely and incredible at her job so I'm biased.

Alice is lovely. I have one with it as a middle name. Never gets a lice. That's just silly.

While of course you don't need a justifiable reasons for not choosing a name, some of your reasons are bizarre. We must read different novels as most of my fictional Helens are the tall, elegant best friend who slightly intimidates the protagonist! Is your mum a naive pushover? I don't think that is a very commonly held stereotype of a Helen.

Athena is lovely and you both like it so...?

In a similar vein to some of your names, how about Odile or Olympia?

Helen is lovely. I knew a Helen once - she was so nice!
Athena is ok and if you both like it then go for it but if you're posting on here then I'm guessing you're not 100%
No to Lydia, someone once said to me when I was considering it ' lid of ya dustbin'
And it completely put me off!!

Why does Frances = Fanny? All the ones I've known have been Fran (& hated being called Frances but that's by the by).
