Emile or Thibault???

Hi. Do you prefer Emile or Thibault? I prefer Thibault (I like Bo as a nickname). My husband prefers Emile. However, we both love both. Thank you.

I love Emile. I so wish I or dh was French for this very reason so I could choose from the lovely boys names.

I just associate Emile with the footballer Emile Heskey, nothing wrong with it, but the Thibault name I agree with PP that it's gonna be associated with the Tybalt character

I love Emile! My only association for it is the book by Rousseau, but that's not a bad one. I don't think a little Emile would be called 'Emily' either - lots of names have feminine and masculine versions!

Emile sounds nothing like Emily Hmm that's like saying children calling Kieran/Ciaran will be called Kiera/Ciara to tease them Hmm

Because Emile would be changed to Emily to tease him. Because Thibault would have to be spelt out every time he gave the name. Close members of my immediate family have names which are perfectly common where they originate from, but they have found them agonising at times out of context.

I agree the spelling and pronunciation of Thibault might present a problem. I'm guessing some people will see Shakespearean Tybalt (as demonstrated by this thread) and pronounce it that way.

But I don't think they will 'die of embarrassment' at their names. Grin I know plenty of people with 'unusual' French names in the UK.

If they're living in the UK, Thibault is going to be a nightmare, OP. Emile is fine.

I am aware that they are perfectly common names in France, but on the assumption that most people seeking opinions on baby names on a UK based site will be living in the UK, I stand by my opinion that they are cute names for toddlers, but the child will die of embarrassment in their teenage years.

If you're planning to live in the U.K., Emile is a much easier name for Brits to manage. I love it (probably because I knew a lovely Emile).

I also assumed Thibaut was Tybalt Blush

Emile sounds a bit wet. Sorry.

Think OP might be French, sticker. It's perfectly normal name there. Emile is considered kind of old man chic, perhaps. Thibault was very popular 80s and 90s, and though not as popular still fairly popular now.

Please think about whether names like these will suit teenage boys with spots, games consoles and a class full kids with more conventional names. Cute babies grow up & often want to blend in. They are both so drippy.

Looking at Thibault, I want to pronounce it Thigh-bolt, even though I know it's not pronounced like that. I'd avoid that one unless you live in France.

Emile is fine. I prefer the spelling Emil.
