DP's beautiful mother died two years ago. Both his mother an father are Polish.

If our baby is a girl, I'd love to call her Maura, after his mother, but I'm thinking of nicknames I'd probably prefer (I'd never choose Maura, otherwise, itkwim).

So, I've got Molly....

DD1 is called Tabitha, btw (different dad, though).

Polish could be Maria, Marianna, Maryna, Marysia, Maryla, erm.... not sure what more.

Oh wow! I'll ask DP later RE it being Polish! My mum's Irish though, so it would be great either way!

I know one Maura, who is in her 60s (and Irish) She often goes by the nickname Mo.

I like it, assumed its roots were Irish. Recall Maura Tierney played character Abby Lockhart in ER (showing my age).
Anyway Polish or not, who knows why the grandparents chose it, but lovely way to honour DP's late mother.

It's an Irish name, comes from the Irish for Mary - Maire (pronounced my-ra or moy-ra depending where you're from)

I'm Irish and know 3, all who spell it differently Grin Moyra, Moira and Maura.

None have a nn.

Maura is lovely - I've always liked it. I've only ever known one (my very nice high school Chemistry teacher; I think she had Irish or Scottish roots). Anyway, I prefer Maura to Molly (although don't dislike Molly).

Though I agree with mistermagpie that there doesn't need to be one, or at least not one which has been decided on before birth. The best nicknames just sort of happen and have little or nothing to do with the person's actual name, in my v humble opinion.

I know two Maura's, both in their 60s and both Irish. i like the name though and think it is due a comeback in the same way as Martha/Edith/Eliza etc. It doesn't need a nickname at all, but people on mn seem to think that evey name needs a nickname!

I always thought Maura was firmly Irish. I would have thought if Polish it'd be pronounced with the first syllable rhyming with cow.

I think Maura is a lovely name! It sounds feminine and is short enough not to need a nicknmame. And it has huge meaning to you. Great choice!

My granny was called Maura! It's a lovely name. She never had any nicknames at all though. She was always just Maura. I read a Martina Cole book a while ago where the main character is called Maura and she gets called Maws.

To be very honest I'd use it as a middle name and pick a name you really want as a first name. All the Mauras I know (all between 55 and 80) are called Mary - Maura is the pet name. I personally find it very old fashioned and not in a granny chic way more in an Assumpta/Concepta /Maureen type way.

It's a lovely name - give her a nickname unrelated to her name if you really want her to have one.
