William is not international at all. Billy would be easier for French and German speakers.

But Emil is much much nicer!

I like "Emil" but Buttercup has a point, it's so uncommon so people will associate to "Emily". I don't suppose William is an option? That's pretty international.

Buttercup, it is pronounced Emeel so Emily wouldn't be as obvious a nickname as you might think.

Oh Emil, definitely! I love it when children's names are also storybook characters they can discover as they grow up. It's magical sharing a name with a literary hero!

Billy is a goats name to me, sorry. And childish sounding.
