Nicknames for James

Hi,

We have called DS (7 weeks) James and intended to call him this but we are finding that we are calling him Jamie some of the time. He seems to suit it. Family members have also asked us which nickname we are using.

It got me thinking, what do you think of the different nicknames for James? What is your favourite/least favourite?

I can think of:

Jamie
Jim
Jimmy
Jay

Thanks for the comments! There are definitely some nicknames I have never come across before. We hadn't intended to use a nickname but James seems a bit grown up for our little bald baby, I'm sure he will suit it a bit better when he's a bit older!

My James is Jim, Jimi, Jimbo, Jamesie, Jemima is a funny one. One of his friends calls him Jamie but I'm not so keen.

I think Jamie sounds more up to date than Jim or Jimmy, and if you're already using it a bit, it's probably the "right" name for him iyswim. I've known a few Jamies whose friends call them Jay, but it sounds like you're already open to Jay so that shouldn't be a problem.

I should have had a James, I love all of its variations. I particularly love Jim, but really like Jamie too. And James by itself is great. No one would have pissed me off with what they called my son 😀

My James (9) quickly became Jimmy. Most of his school friends now call him Jim. All teachers know him as Jimmy.
Only his Scottish grandma calls him James- I think there are connotations with Jimmy in Scotland- but my son doesn't always realise she's talking to him.
For fun, amongst family, he is often called Jimothy (?) or Bobs ( short for Jimbobs I suppose)

DH is sometimes referred to as Jimbo by his mum and sister.

FWIT as a James DH thinks it is perfectly acceptable to use Jamie as a NN for a James.

We have a James in the family, he's 5 and gets called Jazz. I love it and it suits him.

I wouldn't get into the habit of a nn if you don't want to, they're usually pretty awful and should be a natural thing rather than forced or chosen imho.

My DH is James, just James.

Jamesie, Jim, Jimmy, Jim Jam, and shithead!! ( well he is sometimes and that's what dh and I call him sometimes if it's been a long day!!!)

My 11yo is a James and just gets called James as that's what he prefers, though I sometimes throw a Jamesie in :)

I would not shorten James at all btw.

I like James and Jamie . Know a small child called Jimmy, probably quite trendy in manner if Ronnie, Vinnie etc but am not very keen. I'd stick with James and let nicknames evolve, which tends to happen anyway.

DS is almost 18 now but autistic and very proper, likes rules and things being correct and stuff...one person called him Jamie when he was younger and he just said, in a very definite voice, "My name is James". She didn't make that mistake again Grin

I don't like any nn that come from James but love the name! It doesn't need shoetening (or lengthening!) so none seem natural.
