What could Jed me short for?

I overheard the name Jed for a boy recently and really quite like it. I know it's a stand alone name but it seems a bit nick-namey to me and I prefer longer names. Can anyone think of a name it could be short for? or a nickname for?

The only Jed I have heard of is Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies.

Ooh I quite like Gerard. Ged would be a nice spelling too. Not quite so keen on Jedediah.
