Luisa, Esmeralda or Ana?

Which one do you like and why? And if you like all, can you list in order you like them... Trying to name DD2...

Esmeralda is lovely!

I'm not terribly keen on Luisa I don't think. Is it pronounced Lou-wees-a or Lou-weez-a? I like the second pronunciation but not really the first.

Ana is nice too but I prefer Esmeralda by far.

I like Ana but on its own it sounds odd. Ana Luisa is nice. Or even Ana Clara.

I agree with LaLaLolly, I think my daughter probably has the same classic and beautiful name as hers Wink.

Luisa is pretty but she will have to spell it every single time as people will assume Louisa. I have to spell my name often and I find it really annoying and wish my parents had chosen differently!

Ditto Maddalena. Also will be shortened to Maddy.

Ana looks to me as though there is a missing "L"..... Sorry.

Esmerelda I think sounds Ott. Like a fairytale name.

When child is tiny you can call them what you like, noone can insist on a nickname. However when at school it is obviously up to them if they prefer Lou or Maddy.

Luisa is nice, but be prepared to have to spell it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

I know it doesn't sound like a big deal now, but it will get weary (I have that experience with my children's Portuguese surnames and it's tiresome).

If it helps, we chose a Latin name for our daughter that's classic (queens and saints type name), that everyone can spell/pronounce both here in the UK and globally. We then gave her a middle name we LOVE but tricky for English speakers. Worked well for us.

Confusedwill we ever find a name that is perfect? Why are there nicknames? Have a three syllable name and never had a nickname... Thought Esmeralda will be shortened as its long but Luisa too... Hm... Need to keep thinking or just get over the nickname and just use the full name in the family...

Yes, Lou seems most common, but occasionally Weesa.

Thank you LaLaLolly. DH rejected Madalena so we now narrowed it down to Esmeralda or Luisa. Ana/ Anna we are not considering as it is very common and felt we wanted something a little more unique...

I like Madalena.

Wouldn't choose Esmeralda for a child.living in the UK because I don't like the way English speakers pronounce it.

Thank you reuset, but misspelling is OK as long as the name sound is OK. Read somewhere that Luisas are called Lou or Lulu in the UK, is that true? Do not want nn and much prefer the full name and Esme for Esmeralda is OK though not favorite but Lulu or Lou not the nicest sound for a grown woman. I also do not like Louise as the name we prefer is Luisa. Would that be an issue?

Just to say this s one of the first OP's (ok I probably exaggerate) where Esmeralda has been spelt correctly!

I'd plump for Luisa. Purely because nobody can spell Esmeralda. Look about this very thread for the random 'e' thrown in (Esmerelda), two people, and after reading your OP, in a short thread of 18 Grin

We are now between Luisa and Esmeralda. Second is more unique but can we ensure it us not shortened? First more of a classic. If it's between the two, which will you choose and why?

I like Madalena. I'm shocked with so many saying they like Esmeralda, I think it's awful and so over the top!

But actually they are all great.

My favourite is actually Esmeralda but I put it last because as you said in your previous post it would end up being shortened to Esme which you said you weren't sure about.

I like Luisa, madalena is pretty too and I don't think the mad thing is an issue. If children want to they can find something with every name.

Ooo love Madelena! Don't worry about the 'mad' thing. Maddie for Madeleine is common (frequently used) here. Elena avoids that, of course.

Still liking Esmerelda, too.
