Jakub or Kacper? Maybe Olaf?

To all of you who think nobody will be able to grasp the concept of a "foreign" name:

I like Jakub.

If you're living in a reasonably ethnically mixed area of London I really don't think you should worry about foreign names being difficult to pronounce/spell or weird or whatever. Yes, their classmates parents might have difficulty with a name but the classmates themselves will be fine with it. And the teachers will have to cope as it is their job!

Yes around here kak/kack/cack all means shit, poo, crap. Not a good sound in a name here!

Jakub and Kuba are nice, tho I assume people may say it like Jacob rather than Yakub until they hear it properly.

Frozen 2 due out in Spring 2018 and there will be a third if it does as well as the first ...

I like jakub or olaf.

Olaf is the best for me by far.

Kacper = Kac = Cack... we can see where that one goes.

Jakub could become Jack. If your'e happy with that.

OP - just a word to say that although you wouldn't anglicise the pronunciation, your DS may well, so it might be better to choose a name of which you don't mind the anglicised version!

I know quite a few Jakubs and a couple of Kacpers - two of the Jakubs are known as "Jake", at least two are pronounced "Jacob" and both Kacpers are pronounced "Casper" (one set of parents writes the name as Kasper for school so that's how he spells his name, even though birth certificate has Polish spelling).

I suppose it's no different to avoiding a long name when you hate the related nickname - if you can't stand "Ben", don't choose "Benjamin" because odds are it's going to get shortened, even if you don't shorten it yourself.

Other than that - choose the name you like best!!

I am genuinely at some of the comments on here OP. All your names are lovely and I'm sure that as long as they are not an arsehole people will be able to pronounce them perfectly well.

Personally I prefer Jakub, I've never heard the nickname Kuba before but think it's lovely.

DS2 has an Olaf, a Jakub AND a Kacper in his class! All nice names (I would have pronounced Kacper like 'Casper' though and suspect all the teachers say it that way). No one has batted an eyelid about any of the names, DS hasn't even passed comment about Olaf (who he plays with a lot) and he's Frozen mad.

I love Olaf. Jakub is fine but less interesting, Kacper will get mauled by non-Polish speakers.

FWIW I pronounced it like catch-per when I first saw it - is that right?

DS has a friend called Kacper - great name and no one has a problem with it. I wouldn't think twice about using a Polish name OP. Go for it.

Should also have said where I live in the U.K (not on the mainland) is quite a small place but we do have some polish kids in our school and other nationalities yet no one has any difficulty in pronouncing their names!

Josie your baby, so you & DH pick the name you like regardless of other people wish I'd listened to my own advice all those years ago and then my own DC wouldn't have had to change his name!

In my part of the UK cacks/kacks/kaks can mean poop or men's boxers.. so for that alone I'd avoid Kacper!

Jakub's quite nice but surprisingly to me I really like Olaf although there's supposed Frozen 2 coming out if that makes any difference to you.

My DC has a very normal name but there is a certain train with the same name and when DC got picked on in school about it ended up absolutely hating the name so we shortened it and possibly will be making the shortened version the legal name.. does not respond to anyone who uses the original name!

Ok - it was the fact that it looked like 2 well known names with a twist to the spelling. I've seen folk start joke threads about calling their babies

I like Olaf best. I've never seen Frozen so don't know what that connection is but I have read a series of unfortunate events where Olaf is not the best.

Not wild about Jakub but I do like Kuba. Jakub and Kacper are both very, very popular. I would say Jakub is the most popular boys name in my dcs primary school (which is in the middl of nowhere, but is a Catholic school). My 2 dcs still in primary have 6 Jakubs and 2 Kacpers between them in their classes, which means 10% of these 2 classes are Jakubs.

People saying Olaf sounds like a big bearded viking like that's a BAD thing!

Blimey. As a teacher, I have come across plenty of Jakubs and a couple of Kacpers. Neither I nor my colleagues have had any trouble negotiating the minefield of Polish names .

I like Kacper best by the way.

All lovely names, teachers will be very used to Polish names and pronunciation, especially in London. I've taught several Jakubs and Kacpers, no Olafs as yet. His name will just v quickly be him, to friends and teachers etc.

Just goes to show how xenophobic mumsnet is.

Why wouldn't it be a serious thread? Are people's minds really blown by Polish people choosing a Polish name for their child?
