I went to school with a William Williams.

I love surname names. My name is a surname, with a unique spelling ad is probably the most hated name on mumsnet. Which makes me love it even more.

I don't either. If I had to I would go with John, James, Henry, George. Lloyd, Lewis, Morgan(?), Owen etc.

Others I have thought of are Leighton, Ryan, Dennis, Headley, Hayley, Casey, Riley, Ridley, Ripley, Harris ...

I really don't like the style of using surnames for first names, however if I had to I'd go with:

Fletcher
Truman
Campbell
Mason
Mackenzie

Most first names can also be surnames e.g. James, Simon, Walter, George, Oliver, Jack. I know people with each of those as their surname.

Traditional surnames that can switch to first names is the more current US trend e.g. Addison, Jackson, Emerson, Harrison, Forbes, Mackenzie etc.

I met a Donald Mcdonald once Grin and yes lots of scottish names can be surnames frasier is another one

There is a mumsnet hatred of the surname as a first name thing. It's a tradition in many parts of the country. Boys that I knew at school in Scotland had names like Bryce, Bruce, Kirk, Lawson, Wilson, Allan, Campbell, Cameron, Forbes, Murray, Maxwell and Nelson.

To be honest I can't say I am a fan of the surname as first name trend, and for some reason I think if it's chosen for one child then their siblings' names should be like surnames too otherwise it could look a bit odd. Works better for boys' names too.

Ellis - both my boys have Ellis as a middle name as its a family surname.
