Why is Peggy not more popular?

I was just reading about Peggy Ashcroft and it made me think.

It's the perfect meeting of the "old lady name" trend (Iris, Sylvia, Elsie, Maude etc) and what I think of as "smiley" names (Poppy, Molly, Ellie, Chloe etc)

So why am I not meeting any tiny Peggys?

I had a great aunt Peggy who was awesome so it was definitely on my girls list. Also Peggy from mad men.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/01/2017 08:48

Daisy is the other nn for Margaret isn't it?

I love Margaret and Peggy.

Pluto30 · 23/01/2017 08:44

Peggy is awful.

Reminds of teeth or "peg leg".

Manumission · 23/01/2017 07:59

I'd guess via "Meg" Errol (?)

It's like Polly being a NN for Mary isn't it? - bit obscure.

We (by which I mean DP Grin) are considering Margaret and DP keeps saying that Peggy is a lovely NN. I can't quite put my finger on why I'm not into it. It's somehow more properly old fashioned than charming old fashioned?

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 23/01/2017 07:56

I also had a very severe great auntie Peggy!

To me it's too much of a pet name (like Dolly, Biddy, Minnie, Kitty etc) and I'm not keen on using such names unless you give the child a more formal name to fall back on

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2017 07:56

I don't think we're allowed a new generation of Peggys until Peggy Archer has shuffled off her immortal coil. Grin

How on earth did 'Peggy' arise from 'Margaret'? It's puzzled me since I first twigged this reading Swallows and Amazons.

Manumission · 23/01/2017 07:53

Oh no. No more googling stuff I read on MN. DD was quite stern on that point Grin

Uh okay. Some reasons then Smile

But Thatcher and Mitchell have gone now so maybe that will help. I didn't have any Gt Aunt Peggys myself, which also helps.

Because it's a pet form of Margaret? Many people might not want their child to have the same name as a rather notorious prime minister.

Jooni · 23/01/2017 07:15

I know a little Peggy, who's about 20 months now. I love it on her - adorable! It is gradually getting more popular now actually.

OllyBJolly · 23/01/2017 07:12

Probably too many of us remember elderly Aunt Peggys? Just about everyone I grew up with had an aunt (or great aunt) Peggy.

finallyfinishedit · 23/01/2017 07:12

Sorry it's just awful! Couldn't tell you why though

FannyUmbongo · 23/01/2017 07:12

Mitchell.

Patienceisvirtuous · 23/01/2017 07:11
