Boy name Spike?

So we're having another boy. With DS1 I have exhausted all boy names that I really like - it's a rare but not a unusually-sounding name if that makes sense, and more commonly used as a surname.

DP suggests Spike, I laughed at first but it's kind of growing on me. What do you think?

Spike Milligan's name wasn't Spike - it was Terrence.....

Go with a "proper" name and then use Spike as nick name.

I think it's a cute nickname. Maybe give him another name he can use if he chooses/when he's older too.

I know an adult with the given name Spike, he absolutely fucking hates it. 25 years of people assuming he's a dog (I'm not kidding).

I knew a cool/alternative student called Spike. He's now a headmaster who uses his given name (Michael). I guess if he'd gone on to be a member of a band or a juggler or one of various other 'creative' careers he might have stuck with Spike!

I've just checked, and I can't find a single high court judge, hospital consultant, QC, high ranking armed forces person, senior police officer, headteacher, politician or journalist called Spike.

however, a quick check at Battersea ...............

OK thanks for drumming some sense into me everyone, I agree Spike is too much. Great nickname for those who can carry it off though.

So another option - Ivo. I'm from Eastern Europe and we would pronounce it Eevo, would it sound weird to English speakers? Or he could be Eyvo in the UK and Eevo when we visit my family?

It's fine as a nickname, but I'd give him a proper name as well.

There's also the fact that spike as a noun isn't a particularly positive thing. Makes me think of pointy bits on wrought iron fences and the like. Please don't.

I have a Spike (he had spiky hair as a baby and the nickname stuck). He has a very normal actual name and answers to both.

I agree with pps that it isn't a forever name. Spencer has similar vibes but is a lot safer.

tiny I considered that but DS1's first name is more commonly used as a surname so don't want to repeat. I really like Spencer though.

Press Gang & Spike Lee spring to mind (real name Shelton) as well as Milligan.
