Effie was on my list would have been short for Persephone. Unfortunately I work with an Effie who is very high up in the office and a bit of a bully.

I know two women of Greek origin called Effie so I always presumed it was a Greek name?

In any case, it's pretty and I never thought it was short for anything when I met the two Effie's I know.

Exactly. It's not about prevention, but having a name that can be taken seriously. Is it really so bad to give a child a longer name they can use if they wish, but have a cute nn as well?

Of course it wouldn't prevent her from becoming a high court judge but how might it make her feel? I know a Candy who finds her name a real embarrassment, even though she works in an artistic field. It's on her birth certificate so she's stuck with it in a way she wouldn't be if it were just a nickname.

Elizabeth, Elspeth, Stephanie, Josephine etc are all great suggestions that would give your DD more options.

I really doubt she'd prefer to be josephine.
Obviously im totally biased but it is a name that pops up (effy from skins, effie trinket in hungar games, neither of which are cutesie) i know of a further 2 in my local area (not fictional characters!) its really not that outrageous and like pp has said, there's probably a great auntie effie somewhere not to distant from you especially if your up north!

I'm not sure - I'm old enough to have grown up knowing many older women who were called Effie as a nn for Euphemia (for obvious reasons), so for me it's still an old lady's name, bit like Doris and Ethel iykwim.

Its short for euphemia. Very old highland name. I had quite a few old auntie Effie's.

I have an effie!! 90% of people ive met seem to love it, the others dont say much which says it all but i couldnt care less what they or anyone else thinks. I personally think its totally cool and not at all cutesie, do it!

Esther or Estelle with a nickname of Essie has a very similar feel.

I like it but it needs to be a nickname. Give her a proper whole name she can use when she's older. It's not fair to give a child a name that only works for a child when one day they'll be an adult. What if she wants to be a lawyer or a chief executive?

I think it's nice as a nickname but would like the choice of a'proper' name if it were me.
