There was a Mitchell in our crowd growing up and he was just the coolest guy.
I also have a nephew Mitchell.

Neither could be described as chavvy. Both are Scottish.

number7 , how is it awful though? It is a perfectly usable name, it's not one of these faddy surnames names, Mitchell has been around for decades, I know a few born in the late 80s and 90s.

What makes Mitchell different from the names you mention?

I don't mind it. Much better than Malcolm and Walter (see other threads) which seem more popular for some reason.

It's definitely not a chavvy name in Scotland. The one I know is known as Mitch by almost everyone though. I'm not keen on this shortening.

I'm not sure why all of these people are commenting about it being a surname and therefore not appropriate as a first name? Confused

It was an extremely popular name in Australia a couple of decades ago. I couldn't count on one hand the number of Mitchells I know. Perfectly normal, acceptable first name. Not chavvy. Needs a comeback, just like Michael.

swimmer lots of perfectly nice boys' names are surnames: Charles, Andrew, Oliver, Edward, John, Arthur, Albert, Philip, William, Henry, Harry, Joshua, Jeremiah, Keith (ok that's not a nice name), Michael, Robert, Simon etc.

Mitchel is just awful because it's awful.

It sounds like mispronounced Michael to me. That's probably how I'd spell it if you said it to me.

I used to go out with one who was charming on the outside but an absolute cuntweasel underneath it all (for a while I was convinced that under the cuntweasel was a very insecure but very thoughtful guy - turned it there was a cockwomble under that)

I dont mind the name itself though I suppose, just has too many associations for me

It's demonstrably a surname. Michael is lovely, as is Matthew. If you want the Scots connection, there are plenty of lovely Scottish names that aren't clan family names

Big Modern Family watchers here. We often say "really, Mitchell, really?" a la Cameron.

It is ok. I think of it as quite american but I live in the US and don't know any Mitchells so not sure why.

I like it, I know a few Mitchells ages ranging from 6 months to 35.
