Ezra - don't think I'm brave enough, opinions pls?

I love it, but DP has said no for baby due in a few weeks both of my sons names came into the top ten about two years after they were born so I think I'm pretty good at spotting the ones that will become popular but aren't overused at the time.

I quite like it, I'd always think of it as a boys name. I know 3 born this year all to hipsterish parents - sort of this years Arthur/Milo/Arlo/Stanley.

Just so long as you're absolutely sure your child will feel the same. I would rather not make decisions requiring another person's bravery without their consent, personally but, as Mumsnetters say, perhaps that's just me.........

Ezra is a new entry in the 2016 charts at no.73...thats a good position imo- shows other people like it enough but its not everywhere.

The woman isn't old, she is a young woman in her 20s.

I know one woman (old family friend) in the States who is called Ezra.

I really like it and would never consider it a girls name.

If you have to ask yourself whether you're brave enough, don't do it.

I have no idea whether any bravery will be required, but if there is, it won't you who needs to display it!

The actor Ezra Miller is pretty cool, as is the lead singer of Vampire Weekend.

No one has heard it and thought he was a girl though. I agree, it is getting more popular, we have encountered one more Ezra at a baby group.

1. I don't think you even need to be that brave to use it. It has been rising in popularity very sharply over the last few years, and I would bet a LOT of money on it being in the top 100 for 2016. Old Testament names are very cool right now, and Ezra is one of the coolest! I'm surprised it's taken this long to catch on, but it's definitely going to become a fixture in the top 100 (probably top 50) over the coming years.

It's getting more popular. I know a little baby girl called it, and she gets called Ezzie as well. I assumed she was a boy though when I met her, as it's a boys name.

It's nice if not a bit trendy. It's a solid Old Testament name, I picture a wise old man rather than a girls name! It could well become as popular as Noah.

If someone told me about someone called Ezra I'd presume a male. It doesn't sound remotely feminine to me.

I like it and coincidentally met an Ezra for the first time yesterday. He was around 18 years old, known as Ez/Ezzy to his mates. It suited him.

To me Ezra is clearly a boy's name. Bear in mind that the character called Ezra in Pretty Little Liars is a creep and worse, but I doubt anyone will remember the show by the time your DS is old enough to care.

Why would it only be appropriate for a Jewish boy FabFiveFreddie? There are lots of Old Testament names common in the Christian tradition, like Rachel, Naomi, Joshua, David etc.

I have never heard of Ezra being a girl's name in Turkey, although Esra is in Turkey and the Arab world. It is pronounced completely differently though with the emphasis on the second syllable, at least in Arabic speaking countries.

There is a French singer called Erza who is quite famous, I think her name is Albanian.

I like it. Old Testament boys names are very popular in general and most people seem to recognise them as that completely fine.

I agree that Ezra in Pretty Little Liars probably has made it more commonly known.

Having had a similar dilemma when choosing our DS's name I would definitely say be brave! We dithered about an unusual name and went for it in the end - the name fits him perfectly and I can't imagine him being called anything else.

Ezra is a proper name so if you like it, go for it!
