How do you pronounce Samuel?

I thought it was Sam-yall? (Yall rhymes with ball) of course accents are different, so basically is it 1 or 2 syllables?

Just in case you're interested, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge hated his first name exactly because he didn't like the pronunciation being so hard to pin down.

I like to think I say Sam-yule, but I've just said it a few times, tryin to sound casual, and it's closer to Sam-yill. Either way, two syllables!

I'm from Hampshire (so you know my accent) and I pronounce it Sam-Yule. I've never particularly noticed people over pronounce the 'U'

DP is a Samuel (though 99% of the time a Sam) and if he's ever called 'Samuel' it's 'Sam-yule'. I shall say his name with three syllables later and see if he looks at me like Confused Grin

The original Hebrew form, Shmuel is two syllables (smhoo-el), so I've instinctively always pronounced the English form with two syllables as well.

Sam-yule in English and Sam-u-well in Portuguese. I only know one Samuel, my son's classmate and he's Brazilian. All the English ones are Sam, no idea if they are officially Samuels

I think it should be three sam you el based on the traditional biblical interpretation. I say sam Yule though

I know 2 families with Samuel's.

One pronounce it Sam Yule.
The other Sam you elle.

If I read it I'd say it the 1st way but would say Sam you elle if you told me that was the way you said it.
